Focus 1.6 Tdci Loss Of Power

Featured Replies

Having a strange problem with my Mk2.5 Focus 1.6 TDCI.

Of recent I find that if I accelerate heavily the car doesn't seem to pick up speed properly, this isn't always the case however it's only sometimes.

Last week for about 4 days the car didn't have the power it's supposed to and could be a bit jerky at times but not terrible either.

I drove a 100 mile trip out the motorway last Friday and on the way up car again had reduced power, seemed heavy at times and I noticed the fans stayed on for a minute after I turned off the engine.

Drove home then on the Sunday and since then the car seems back to its regular self.

This happens every few weeks and I don't know what to put it down to. Dash isn't displaying any fault codes either.

Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Hi David,

It sounds like the dpf is becoming blocked.

This results in the egr recirculating more dirt than usual,

Which will give flat spots as the dirt gets recirculated.

First thing id do is blank the egr see guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/42915-guide-fitting-egr-blanking-plate-16tdci-engine/

After blanking id purchase a bottle of diptane fuel additive to help clear the dpf.

On the next oil change,

Purchase a can of Wynne's engine flush and put it in before draining the oil to help flush out carbon from turbo feed pipe.

After this id be looking in to having the dpf internally removed to eliminate reoccurrence of the issue.

MFK Autocare done my dpf and i highly recommend there service for a factory looking finish,

Looks like it was never touched which is exactly what you need for future nct testing, the chamber needs to be visually present.

See there website:

http://www.mfkautocare.com/

You may also like to upgrade the induction filter to a K&N57s or Green Cotton see guide:

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/36783-green-cotton-performance-induction-filter-fitting-guide/

Also visually inspect the top of your fuel injectors for signs of leaking,

Common problems with the 1.6TDCi is turbo failure due to blocked dpf, carbon blocking turbo oil feed pipe caused by egr valve recirculating carbon contaminating the oil,

And separate common issue is fuel injector leaking.

If egr is blanked and dpf gutted your car will be trouble free for much longer,

Text book turbo failure is at 90-110k

I've blanked egr, gutted dpf, remapped 35bhp increase, 2.5" exhaust and now at 195k on factory turbo.

Preventative measures save money.

I don't think all of the DPF DTCs lights up on the dash, that regeneration threshold one or something similar to that. I remember seeing that when I first got my modified ELM 327, which sparked me in to action to "fix" the problem :D

195K on the factory turbo!?!...Wow! Didn't think it could alst anywhere near that. Then again most people buying cars especially diesels don't do there research, and the 1.6 DV6 engine is not one that tollerates neglect.

Lenny is your Focus the 90bhp or the 110?

I have a bottle of Redex in my boot to clean the injectors but I need to get a special fuel funnel first before I can put it in strangely

im just wondering if there is another potential cause for carbon build up and that's the breather pipe, I had a failed o ring on that pipe and the amount of oil that must be getting ingested is staggering, I don't know the science of it all but I cant imagine burning engine oil is going to be good for anything.

I have a custom made oil catch can on its way from the states which will at the very least stop oil building up in the intercooler

Mines a 90bhp remapped to 125bhp with 2.5" duplex exhaust, egr blanked, dpf removed and green cotton induction filter fitted.

Plan to upgrade to 110 injectors and hybrid turbo from TRW at some point perhaps this time next year as im currently upgrading sound system and sound damping the body.

Link to TRW:

Still though running a stock turbo since 2010 pushing 35bhp extra from it 1.9 bar boost

Only fuel with Topaz getting 21.9Km per litre so on 50ltr Tank thats 1095km there's 4.5ltr in a Gallon so thats 98.6 K to the G

Prius drivers be haten yo!!

My clutch is starting to squeak a bit on take off lately though,

Got my eye on a stage 2 Kevlar :)

Id avoid redex mate it strips oil and everything,

Its too good if you get me,

Suppose its ok to use once or twice but not regularly.

The plastic funnel you require is specific diameter to open the flap on capless fuel system,

There under 10 from ford. Mind not too many things are

Ha your off the same branch as me so, I'm constantly spending my wages on something for the car it's like an addiction...if I didn't own a car I'd be loaded.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that the 90bhp Focus's didn't have a DPF? I know the 1.8 TDCI definitely doesn't have one.

I'd say my car is pushing between 140 to 150bhp at the moment, that's a guess obviously but my last car was a 2.0TDI A3 140 and it feels slightly lively than that. I still feel a slight hesitation low down in the throttle but Im putting that down to the clogged DPF, would make alot of sense. If you upgraded your injectors I'd say your car should easily push the 140 or 150 mark. That's the main difference between the 90bhp and the 110 isn't it, different injectors and a different map?

im the same always working at something in the car, I've a wife and three kids now so i don't drink or smoke just work six days a week and the focus is a hobby and escape from the house,

I mostly shop on ebay.co.uk and use the parcel motel address saves a fortune.

Been modding the focus since September 2010 hurts to add up the money spent including purchasing the car itself id have been cheaper purchasing an ST but then i couldn't take it on tour like i can with the diesel :)

Injectors, map and turbo,

You guys have the Garrett 1544V

Mines got a tiny 1533v :) need to upgrade the injectors and turbo,

I thought i had a ceramic dpf, if not ive now got half a catalyst

The 110bhop has a little box on the left side of the battery box with a wire coming out of it,

Not sure what that is neither,

Saw it on two 110 models at the meet in swords last September
