What Should Be Included In The 3Rd Service On A New 1.6 Petrol Focus?

the other half took her new shape 61 plate 1.6 petrol focus in to ford today for its 3rd service (it's done 28,500 miles) they said it's the big major service and would cost £285, so ok that's not too bad for a major service we thought, we collect the car a few hours later and get given a receipt that basically says all they done was change oil, oil filter, air filter, and plugs totalling £72 leaving £213 for labour, took them just over an hour and half.

Just wondering if this was right and if anything else should have been changed? I asked about fuel filter and pollen filter and was told they didn't need doing on a major service,

oil filter, air filter, sparkplugs, 4 litres engine oil, pollen filter if requested, a charge for lubricants/greases, labour 1.5 x £90? and 20% vat of total to the government(£47ish)

major service and they did not change pollen/fuel filter seems strange not too also very high labour rates for the time that they took to do service

That's exactly what I thought to be fair, it wouldn't be going anywhere near the place again if it weren't for the warranty

Not as far as I know nothing was mentioned, they seemed more interested in selling me a top up of antifreeze for £10, an aircon top up for £70 and some front pads for £120

I do not know the pricing policy in the UK but in the Netherlands Ford has fixed prices for the scheduled service specified in the service schedule list. The actual prices are listed on the Dutch Ford website. Some required maintenance like changing the brake fluid every 2 year and changing the interior filter (or the more expensive pollen filter) are charged seperately.

In the Netherlands 1 full year of roadside assistance is included with the service. However many times the dealer does not mention it and you have to ask for it yourself.

This is based on yearly 3rd year and says 37000 but cars only done 28500

The service intervals are based on both mileage and age (whichever comes first). So If you drive only 5K a year you still have to service the car anually. Ford has very strict rules about service intervals. The warranty will be voided if the car is not serviced as specified.

Just bought a mk3 on an 11 plate so I believe the warranty has expired regardless. It drives perfectly but in terms of prevention, is it advisable to have it serviced considering the last service was in June 2013 even though its only done 5k miles since then?

In your case the normal 2 year warranty has already expired but the car has also a 12 year bodywork warranty which covers rust from the inside. The strict Ford rules about scheduled service do also apply on the 12 year bodywork warranty. The bodywork warranty requires an annual bodywork inspection which is part of the annual service. If the car is not serviced within the specified time the bodywork warranty requires a seperate annual bodywork inspection.

If the scheduled service has not been performed within the specified time or if there are service stamps missing in the service book the bodywork warranty will be voided. In your case the bodywork is already voided because the service is not performed within the specified time. Personally I would go back to the dealer which sold the car to you and ask about the bodywork warranty.

sara (aa breakdown cover for 12 months)should have been offered free of charge when you paid your bill, if you havent then you need to call in to get that sorted, only takes 2 mins to register your car.

As for body inspection, its carried out every 2 years so book wont be stamped at this service,

As for warranty its 3 years or 60k which ever comes first

Irrespective of warranties, does anyone know what service schedule is applied if you book in a car for its 4th annual service if there has been no 3rd annual service? Im not talking 3rd/4th service specific, just in general what would they do if you serviced the car 1.5 years after the previous. Cheers.

if your aware of the 1.5 years since your 2nd service, then you should make garage aware of this, it will be a combination of 3rd and 4th service, each service specifys different parts replacement and operations.

basically it should be 3rd service so sparkplugs,airfilter are changed or airfilter fuel filter on diesel. then 4th service oil filter, pollen filter and other operations like wheels off , brake inspection, drums off if fitted etc.

3rd service is called interim service , 4th major service.

different services have different combinations of operations, is a pain sometimes knowing what service to do.

years ago it was simple, interim service oil and filter basics. full service was oil,air fuel,plugs brakes etc.

So basically in laymans terms, they should do the checks to bring it up to the current service schedule?

yes, if you went straight to 4th service then you will have missed out on air filter and plugs, so they wouldn't be changed until 62.5k /6year, causing all sorts of problems!! and same goes for having 3rd late, wheels/drums wont be off checking brakes close up,
