How Often Do You Read The Road Signs?

Featured Replies

Even in areas you know very well, how often can you honestly say you've read the road signs?

Reason I ask is literally overnight around here and without warning, they changed a 30 zone to an enforced 20 zone (red circle), which meant when I went to work I could do 30 through this zone but on the way back I was limited to 20...

Since then I really wonder how many people have noted the 20 zone discs doted on lampposts and driven over the painted 20 without a care, as it still only seems a handful of people my self included who obey the new limit, cars regularly snarling up my backside, and so on...

I think most people pay little attention to road signs in areas they know as they are not looking for signs to see where they need to go.

I have seen temporary 50 signs put up on busy NSL roads for no apparent reason, with a mobile speed van tucked around a blind (but still fast) corner...

Saying that I wonder how long it will take them to update the servers on all the sat navs to ensure people follow the correct speed.

I must admit, I am one of the few who looks at all the road signs, no matter where I am!

And I must admit I'm the opposite lol, I do about 99.9% of my driving on familiar roads so I've got into a bad habit of not even being aware of the road signs. It feels very different when I drive on unfamiliar roads because that's when I try to spot all the signs and hazards, so it feels like I'm concentrating a lot harder compared to being on autopilot driving to and from work.

But still I often find myself thinking "is it 30 or 40 on this road?" and sticking to 30 until I see any evidence that I can go faster.

Yeah, the lack of signage is frustrating. I think that 30 roads should be signposted. Not necessarily with a glaring number 30 every few hundred yards, but when your out of main towns where it's clearly 30, if anyone drives down there and can't tell, they should have new sign that shows its a 30,even if it's only like a small symbol on a small sign, so that it's not ugly to all who live around it but it reminds those who may not be sure.

I have never agreed with the idea that if it's not signposted you should use Street lighting to indicate. I have driven a good few 40 roads, unsigned and unclear, yet with Street lighting that is not as evenly spaced and so you really don't know.

My uncle had this on a road in Hartlepool, dual carriageway, out of town, 30mph and poor lighting. There was nothing clear about it, he got two tickets in one day, going to work and coming back from it. This was the first he knew of the road being 30,shame it cost him 6 points and 120 quid really.

I have always had an idea of speed management and I think its much more fair and clear than the current methods.

I believe the Speed Minder signs should be implemented more. At the entry point of a long 30 zone, it should be a standard radar system, if your speeding, flash up 30 zone as a reminder.

Then, have a system further down the line, this time its linked up to a computer. If you are caught excessively speeding in the area, this triggers a warning on the system - you get a written warning via the post, and no penalisation, but it comes with a 12 months suspension. If you trigger a minor, your allowed say 2 minors (if your speeding by about 5 mpg) in any 6 month period, and beyond that, you then get a written warning, and anything else is speeding points.

Im not advocating speeding, but I think there needs to be a bit more leeway in area's where things are unclear, I think a £100 fine and 3 points can be excessive for a mistake in an unmarked and unclear environment, or for a minor slipup as a "first offence". I think a warning system is better to be used, as then the PNC records these, and at least if you are seen to take the mick, then you are prosecuted duly, and its not like you get away with it.

This happened to a road around the corner from where I live. Quiet ish narrow ish residential road around the corner from a school and very close to the police station.

A year on and I am sure I am the only one that does 20 on it. Whenever I follow a car round a corner from a 30 zone onto this 20 road, the car infront bombs off up the road doing 30 or well over. I'll just sit there doing 20 with some disgruntled idiot tailgating me. Signs are clearly posted every few yards up the road.

Other week I had just got on the 20 road, and a fat bald angry looking gent in a lot smaller banged up car than mine sat behind me the entire way giving it the verbal n making hand gestures.

At the bottom of the road it opens up to 2 lanes for left and right turners. He pulled up along side me calling me a prick and was quite angry. I just shouted back over to him that its 20 you idiot (and some other choice words) but he just could not get it into his head and thought I was in the wrong for doing the limit

Sadly a lot of people struggle to adjust to new limits. I can't deny I do on occasion. There's a dual carriageway near me, used to be 70, not through houses and the only crossings are by the roundabouts, its been dropped to a 50 for no reason (no accidents or trouble spots, no danger) and I try to stick to 50 but on occasion I speed on it and wrongly justify in my head "well it used to be a 70..." I'm wrong for doing it and don't do it often (especially as radar guns are used up there) but knowing it's wrong and still trying to justify the odd occasion in my head is probably what these people do day in day out without thinking they are wrong...
