Mk7 Front Speaker Wiring

Featured Replies

Hey,

I'm doing my first ever car modification / upgrade, trying to install a new set of speakers into my mk7 fiesta (with the full 6 speakers). I have the driver's panel off, the woofer out and the new speaker mounted in it's bracket (but not installed yet). I'm trying to figure out how to wire up the new speaker. I have two metal tabs on the back of the speaker, I'm assuming one is positive and one negative, but on the car I have the white block (which was going into the old speaker) with 4 cables going into it. Can I just solder each pair of wires (black & red/purple // black & yellow/orange) onto each of the tabs? My speaker set came with a little box which seems to split 2 cables into 4 - two connectors for the tweeter and two connectors for the woofer. I don't think I need to use this box but the cables have the proper adapters to connect onto the speaker, should I cut these off and make use of them?

Sorry if this isn't clear, let me know if I need to provide any more information or pictures.

Thanks!

Just cut and solder. A lot of cars do this. Pioneer speaker fit these clips and go straight on but others just use standard m/f connections.

I take it you've bought a component ste that includes a crossover?

On then ford plug 1 pair of wires come from the headunit the other pair goes up to the tweeter.

You shouldn't have to cut anything, spade crimps should push into the ford plug, connect this to the input of the crossover, connect the woofer, install the new tweeter with new cable, just leave the OE tweeter plug disconnected.

This way you can put it back to standard if needed.

If you new speakers are coaxial, just connect the speaker wires to the ford unit with spade crimps.

Yeah, they're components with a crossover. There's two black cables coming from the head unit, but I can't tell which is positive and which is negative - same goes for the coloured ones. How can I tell? The input connections on the crossover are just two cables, they don't have any connectors on the end. Are you saying I need to add some? What's the "OE tweeter plug"? Thanks!

On the other end of the input cables that go into the crossover, fit some crimps on the end of them that can connect into the ford plug, have a look on the original speaker for an indication of which is positive and which is negative. They can be swapped over easily if needed.

If the black ones come from the headunit, connect to these, the other 2 go up to the tweeter, ignore those and use the cable with your speaker kit.

OE = Original Equipment. There is a tweeter behind a grill on the door handle.

So I think I've got the two speakers on the driver's door done. I used a battery to figure out which way round the speaker was, then used that to see which black cable was positive, soldered that onto the positive crossover input, then repeated for the negative. Put the two woofer crimps onto the speaker and mounted that, then mounted the tweeter by the handle and plugged that into the tweeter outputs of the crossover.

I ended up cutting the Ford plug off entirely, as I wasn't using it at all. This will likely come back to bite me in the future, but for now it seems ok. I think I snapped a fair bit of plastic off my door, bits and pieces not quite clicking in properly now, and my door handle cable came out as I was reattaching the panel. Hopefully the passenger side installation goes better tomorrow..!

Thanks for your help!
