Speedometer Problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I recently bought a ford fiesta 1.4 zetec 52 plate and have just noticed that the speedo cuts out every now and then. I'll be driving then all of a sudden the speedo will drop to 0 and stay there for a while then all of a sudden will start working again. Anyone have any ideas why

I had this on my Mondeo (same age and reg as yours), foxed me as well as to why it was doing it - took it to ford - turned out to be the coil in the end, dunno why that affects it but it certainly cured the issue

If you dont mind me asking was it expensive to fix.

As it was three cars ago I honestly can't remember I'm sorry. It's worth bearing in mind though ford garages charge £60 per hour labour, £60 for diagnostics and then their higher than average charge for parts, so all in it's going to be at least over £120, my husband thinks the costs weren't too bad at approx £150, but as said I honestly can't remember either way

Does the whole instrument panel go blank or just the speedo?

the lights and everything else on the dash work fine just the speed needle drops to 0 revs work fine. i think the mileage stops working when the speedo stops working

Yes, mileage quits when the speedo quits. Had this on my Corsa, took it to a garage, diagnostics said it was "this and that", had "this and that" replaced, (at a cost of more than the vehicle value) still the same. My son now has the Corsa as a runabout. No real prob unless its a newish car, gear + rpm = speed.
