2011 Mondeo 1.6 Tdci Start Stop System Malfunction

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 2011 Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCI. It is the Econetic model with Start Stop.

My problem is that the Start Stop is inoperative.

I understand that this system constantly monitors battery state of charge and that it will not function below 72% SOC.

I have also read that it will not operate in very low temperatures and when there is high consumer loads (i.e. fan on MAX).

I have charged the battery and am fairly sure it is above 72%.

I have had a look at the wiring and it appears that there is cut wire (I have attached an end connector) and it looks like it should attached to the Positive terminal of the battery. I don't want to attach it until I can be more certain that that is correct as I don't want to fry the system. I have searched extensively online for a wiring diagram with no luck.

Possibly if there is someone out there with a similar car maybe they could have a look at the top of the battery and post a picture of how the wiring should look.

Thank you all in advance for any help you can offer.

check the negative terminal for the battery monitoring connector, was going to say make sure the right battery is fitted , but looks like the enhanced flooded batery that is on ok.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the response.

The negative connection for the S/S monitoring system is good. My problem seems to be the red wire that comes from the S/S monitor (Pictured). I am not sure what it meant to be connected to.

Many thanks

Would be handy to see a photo of the negative terminal just to help understand what's connected to it.

Also, for the disconnected cable where it merges into the other wiring it looks like it's got felt/fabric tape around it instead of the usual PVC tape? if so it might not be a standard connection but added in by somebody else for some reason.

Stop start system will monitor a ton of different parameters which goes into the logic for it deciding to operate or not. With SOC monitoring that assumes the battery monitoring (BMS) system is actually fitted and working properly. The ones I've seen attach to a plate where a bunch of connectors fit to the negative terminal.

Also not unheard of for smart charging systems to have little software 'gremlins' which can mean the charging cuts off before it's intended level, 70% seems to spring to mind there.

Thank you Troy.

I will get a picture tomorrow of the negative terminal wiring tomorrow.

I feel like flagging down the next 1.6 TDCI Mondeo Econetic I see to ask the driver if I can have a quick look under the bonnet. That might be the easiest way to solve the mystery!

Good luck finding another 1.6tdci out there, alot more 1.8 and 2.0 out there

My Dad has the same year/model as you and his Start/Stop only works when he has been on long journeys, such as Midlands to Scotland Etc.

I looked into it for him and there was some mention that the software was too cautious and can be updated by Ford to rectify, he has not done so though...

What kind of distances have you driven?

I believe that should be fitted to the negative terminal...

Hi Mark,

I have only driven the car from Manchester to Ipswich once (250ish miles). To and from work for the last week 12 miles each way. The S/S has never worked.

Hi James.

I already have a white wire from the S/S system attached at the negative terminal. Do you think both wire should be routed to the Neg terminal?

Is your car wired with S/S by any chance?

Many thanks

Unfortunately I don't have SS , but you should never have a loose connection dangling like that. It certainly looks like the only place it should be connected us the negative though

As it happens just found 1.6tdci mondeo with ss, , if its a red thin wire covered by a ribbed plastic sheathing , then it fits on positive terminal, cars gone now before I had chance to take photo for you .

Connect it to negative, worst case is it does nothing ad you have no live feed, best case it fixed the issue. Alternatively if this doesn't work and that wire reaches the positive terminal, then it may work connecting it there. But most positives do not tap onto the terminal

There you go, found another one, image is poeitive terminal

Did you connect the loose to negative?

Lets hope he didnt, but wouldnt have done any harm. Might be a good idea to reset battery monitoring when he got it sorted,

Iantt,

Thank you very much.

As it happens I tracked down a Mondeo on 1.6 TDCI today and persuaded the owner to let me have a nosey under the bonnet. The red wire attaches to the Positive terminal.

I have attached the wire and the system is now operational. Problem SOLVED!

Thank you all for your help and assistance.

Good to hear you have sorted it out, plenty of us on here happy to help out when we can

Good result, though I thought the red wire was already connected?

If you see the image he put up it didnt show thst wire connected

I must have missed that lol I just saw the dangling csble

Glad you're fixed now - while at work today I did realise that some systems did have an extra eyelet piggybacked onto one of the positive terminal connections, likely with later systems they incorporated the connection into the main loom but often initial introductions of systems like this can be a tad 'ad-hoc'
