Potential Alternator Problem

Featured Replies

Hey everyone.

A little while back I posted about my car just dieing completely no power at all. A new battery fixed this.

Now I am getting the same ghost like noise coming from the engine bay (like a whooooo) at low rev. So not turbo relegated.

The battery light has come on and when the car is in test mode it's showing as 12V. Car is running pretty lumpy and power steering is feeling heavy.

I've been told maybe the alternator bearing have gone.

Anyone had similar to this?

Need a voltmeter to measure voltage accurately

measure 1) the voltage on the battery after its sat for an hour (tells us the battery state)

and 2) the voltage across the battery when the engine is running, soon after you have started up (tells us the alternator output)

Also check the connections to the battery are clan and firm and the same for the alternator

Well it was showing 12v when off and when on went down y around 11.1v.

So the battery is flat, so either its duff or its not charging. Need to know what the voltage is when the engine is running, The sooner after starting the engine the better

Or you have one hell of a parasitic charge!

Battery light is normally pretty diagnostic of a duff alternator, no way voltage should drop that low on a running engine even with a removed battery (DO NOT DO THAT EVER). On some alternators you can just replace the brushes and diode pack, which are the normal culprits

as youve got the whooshing noise as well as low voltage when running as power steering is heavy,(if it was charging properly steering would be normal) it does sound like its alternator replacement time

Lovely. Haha.

I'm not sure weather to take it to a garage or tackle this myself. Haynes makes it seem fairly easy. But there not much room to play with in there.

its not to bad to do, belt off, alternator clutch pulley off, undo air compressor , let it hang down, tricky bit is getting alternator bolts undone, thats a bit of a fiddle.

all depends how handy you are with the spanners.

garage should charge about 1-1.5 hours to do it for you

Whoosing noise and occasional red light could be as simple as a loose belt

auto tensioner on 1.8tdci

I don't know what an auto tensioner is

if its anything like as good as the one on the old 2.0 Zetec in the Mondeo, then I'd definitely check its still autoing!

What is this belt? Where abouts is it located?

Well Alternator replaced and cars running a dream!

Thats good to hear, nice to know I was right! Lol.
