Leaking Estate :(

Featured Replies

Hey guys, anyone else had this problem? In my estate after heavy rain I notice water/water marks on the luggage tonneau... I believe it's dripping from the vents in the rear quarters...

Any ideas?

Many times the roof is leaking between the roof and body panels. These panels are welded together and sealed afterwards with a strong body sealant. This sealant can be found below the black trim on top of the roof. This trim is also glued to the roof with body sealant.

During time the sealant becomes hardened and torsion of the body causes the sealant to crack which results in a leaking roof. Most times this problem can be solved by removing the black trim on top of the roof and resealing the seams between the body panels.

On the top of the roof meaning the rails?

If your car has roof rails the sealant will be below the roof rails. In this case the roof rails are secured from inside the car. To get access to the mounting screws of the roof rails you have to remove the headliner first.

....what a surprise hahaha...

Removed the headliner myself to remove the roof rails last week.

Couldn't see any boots to rent move them. Looked as though they're held in by reviews that would need driving.

Haven't noticed any leaks in my estate (yet!)

Ha, wow - there's some serious auto corrects in there! Let's try again;

Removed the headliner myself last week to see how the roof rails detach.

Couldn't see any bolts holding the rails in place but looked as though they're held in by rivets that need drilling out.

Haven't noticed any leaks in my estate (yet!)

Serves me right for not checking my posts before sending them :D

Ahh that makes sense... Not to worry my posts can often be jumbled...

Hmmm worrying that I'm getting some leaks.... Tends to be heavy rain... Maybe some blutac in places might do the job

Have you felt along the roof liner Ian for any damp spots?

My MK1 estate used to leak and turned out to be coming through the roof rail.

Nope, although you know on the rear quarters there are those sort of plastic panels that have vents in? Not actually sure what they are, I've seen some drips sitting on the vent ridges... I'll have to have them off sometime..

Think they may just be static air vents to improve circulation. They've never blow air with the fans on.

I'll keep any eye on those. Washed the car earlier and can't see any leaks but I'll watch out for it in heavy rain...

Had the roof lining off and I've traced the drips as far as I can...

Not sure if anyone can shed more light on this..

The strange thing is, it seems to leak when the boot is closed, but it seems to stem the drips when the boot is open?? :/

Look at the boot hinges you'll see if the estates the same the hinge sits in a cup they are sealed bottom and sides but not on the top ...seal them inside and out with some marine sealant the other common culprit is the rear lights on the hatchback I'm not sure if the estates the same but again these leak from you're pic boot hinges
