Small Electrical Fire In Engine

Featured Replies

I had a small electrical fire in engine, started engine, got electrical burning smell, then smoke. Turned off engine, opened bonnet and blew out a small flame.

Could anyone offer advise what is causing this, it is located just under the housing of the engine block to the right as you look at it

See attached photo

Thanks

no photo showing, what engine you got, if 1.8 tdci then it could be bad connection at glow plug connector

Yes, it's a 1.8 tdipost-63009-0-40756700-1424120301_thumb.j

Thanks

Looks like its next to the fuel line...has any been spilt?

I don't think so, couldn't see any sign of anything leaking

That was a good guess without photo. Lol

connector will have melted, and caught fire when ign on and glow plug current going through .

Be very carefull, every time you switch ign on it may catch fire.

Best fix is new glow plug wiring assy and new feed cable ring connector on end of cable

Is this a easy fix in the garage, haven't started engine since, may have car towed over

Thanks for advice

Yep , easy fix, either tow it or start it and blow out flames and wait 5 mins so def glow plug feed stopped then drive there not switching engine off until getting to garage , explaining the fault so they dont start it again

towing better option

Thanks for the help Ian

No problem, had same issue with transit connect and took more than blowing to put flames out!! Lol

There's been a few threads on this in the space of a few months... might want to give VOSA a ring about this, one car caught fire after his glow plug wires was replaced

If it caught fire after glow plug wires were replaced then that's the fault of the person who obviously didn't fix it propetly

yes that was one issue, there was another case where it melted on its own, just like the OP is experiencing
