Petrol In A Diesel Focus Mk2

Featured Replies

Yesterday my dad put £10 petrol into my car (dispite the flap saying diesel(see pic) and then he drove it around the corner back home (3 min drive). It sounded really rough, white smoke etc. Anyway, I was advised to fill up to top with diesel and hope for the best :) so with 2 jerry cans and 4 runs later I filled it with diesel premium. I then started it and for about 10 seconds, it was really rough and lots of white smoke, and then it went normal, this morning it was rough on startup, a bit lumpy for 2 mins, but after, it drove fine.

So is there any suggestions on what to look for ect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ps. Its a 2006/07 focus 1.8 tdci.

change fuel filter would be astart and the drain fuel tank

Sounds like you got away with it by dilluting the petrol down enough. Let us know how you get on.

yeah fill it up with diesel and drive until the tank is empty, then best to change the fuel filter once the petrol is out of the system and you should be alright from there

Thanks for all comments, will do fuel filter once empty, it ran a bit better today, not as lumpy this morning. Will keep you updated

what Nexus said.

I would personally only take it down to a minimum of half a tank then fill the tank again for 2 or 3 times, make sure its well diluted.

Changer filter now and again when I got the tank emptied.

I think that's the best solution.

1.8 seam to cope better than the 1.6 when petrol put in, as others said now you have filled it up run it down to 1/2 tank and refill.

hi,, you should have syphoned out as much fuel as possable then filled it with diesel and then run it through as mentioned.
Also get the fuel pump checked as any petrol going through a diesel fuel pump will act as a solvent and clean of any lubrication which then can cause damage.

Yh, I dont think ive caused any damage and think ive been quite lucky, I topped up when it reached 3/4 and trying to keep above 3/4, I plan on doing a major service in a few weeks anyway, also i tried syphoning but would of had to drop the tank. Also ive been looking into terraclean, might help, any thoughts?

Update, this car has still running rough and then this morning my car cut out when in traffic and was coasting. I did a service last weekend. Car wouldnt start, but did after 5 mins of trying. Booked into garage tomorow.

Air lock? When changing the fuel filter

I dont think it is, wouldnt it of been a problem closer to the weekend? ive done quite a few miles since then, also I dont know if related but there was a noise ive noticed over the last few days, its like a worn bearing noise but only on acceleration, no noise when clutch down or driving at steady speed
