Speedo

Featured Replies

Hello my car nearly every day turns the radio up by its self and the speedo needle bounces around Any suggestions. IT IS A MK1.

I have a problem where the radio drops in volume, but the speedo drops to zero and the odometer stops increasing, sometimes going to dashed lines. Some research has suggested it is the speed sensor which is in the back of the gearbox. It appears to be an easy enough part to change, but can be a bit fiddly due to a pin holding it in place. I am going to do mine in a couple of weeks time.

It may be that yours is also speed sensor related but causing different symptoms.

I'd say definitely sensor (VSS) related.

The radio's auto volume control (AVC) takes a signal from the VSS so as to allow the radio to increase volume and overcome background road noise.

Thanks for your info. Will check it out.

Definately vss jus make sure you smother it in wd a week before you do it and also order a new pin.

good luck with vss, can be a right pain getting out, as above wd40 sometimes helps but the seals that tight that nothing seaps past to lubricate.

My MK1 has the same problem, you will also find that if you depress the clutch and try to let the car idle whilst the speedo is not working the car will stall as I believe the VSS contributes towards the fuel/air mixture.

Mine has been like that for the past 2-3 months now and I just don't have the time to fix it, nor the money to get somebody else to!

It is something you get used to, although I'm not saying it isn't on my list to fix! The problem is my list is about 20 pages long...
