Can Steering/tie Rods Be Replaced In Situ On A Mk2 Focus?

Featured Replies

Hi, this is first time post, so hello to everyone.

I've got a 2005 Mk2 focus that I thought had a worn nearside track rod end, but holding the front wheel at 3 and 9 o clock and rocking shows the outer tie rod end is fine, but there is quite a lot of movement where it goes into the steering rack.

Looking at ebay I see you can by replacement tie rods complete with the end that goes into the rack, which looks like it might solve my problem.

Does anyone know if you can replace this arm with the rack still on the car? If so any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards,

Damian

Yes you can manage it in situ.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for getting back to me. When you did it, can you get a spanner on it or is it a case of mole grips or stilsons?

Cheers,

Damian

Hi Damian, Ian is right, but you will need a special tool to do it, the rods are commonly known as (drum sticks) I would recommend a garage to do the work.

Stilsons will do it
