Hatchback Modification

Featured Replies

Hi

I am thinking of raising the height of the floor in the boot to that of the kerb, has anybody done it, I am looking for ideas I have my own thoughts.

It needs to be strong enough to carry heavy loads like paving slabs and garden rubbish

It will only be temporary, removed when not needed or folded up and left in the boot in case of a emergency. (impulse purchase of a new fridge or washer in a sale)

Will the suspension on the hatchback carry the same loads as the estate ?

I miss my old estate

All help appreciated,

Barry T.

Not quite as clean as the foam arrangement you can buy from ford, but it does the job, and of course you can control the height with the thickness of wood you use. I raised it to just high enough that the spare wheel also took the load as well as the boxes

you can make your own false floor like those who install big subwoofers do and use wood/mdf to make it.

your car will not carry the same amount as an estate as that is made to carry the extra weight. the only option you have is to install some custom made springs so that it can carry the extra weight. they shouldn't cost too much.

good luck.

Hi

Thanks for your suggestions,

I always think its best to keep an open mind, look at various options and then pick what is the best fore me.

I think I will fit,

1/ a 10 or 12 m.m. plywood board on top of the foam to spread the load.

2/ 4 No. timber battens about 1 1/4 inches wide in two pieces hinged to extend on top of the base to the back seat.

3/ 10 m.m. plywood in two pieces maybe hinged to extend over base of back seat and on top of timber battens.

4/ Refit the carpet along with some protection for the plastic kerb.

When I am finished it may turn out different to what I first plan.
