Eonon Stereo Replacement - Which One ?

Featured Replies

Sorry another question for you guys :P

I'm going to be changing the stereo in my car, parts have been ordered to convert it from MK2 to 2.5 (Oval Shape), and I just need to settle on which stereo to replace it with. Its definitely going to be an Eonon unit, as they actually seem to have something behind there name, in terms of support and quality, along with a UK address for any returns etc (and some nice YouTube videos showing how easy it is to fit the units).

It currently looks like they have 3 Oval shaped stereo's (for Ford) on sale -

GM5162E - WinCE With Screen Mirroring

D5162E - WinCE Without Screen Mirroring

GA5162 - Android

Screen mirroring I'm not really interested in, so that takes that one out, but the other 2, I'm concerned mainly around the operating system.

With Android, I would expect (with its specs), it runs nice and smoothly, and I also have the Play Store to download all sorts, including other navigation options like TomTom.

The WinCE one, is cheaper, and also has the nice silver bezel around the edge, which would look better in the car, but I have no experience with WinCE, and I also wouldn't know if its possible to load up other map software. The videos I have seen seem to show it running rather smoothly.

Anyone have experience with any of these head units, and how did they find changing Sat Nav software ? How is music selection and presentation, nice album artwork displayed or just bare text ? How was downloading extra software on the Android version ?

Thanks again in advance, this forum really has some knowledgeable people about :)

from what I have read before the wince versions aint brilliant so android is your best bet. I think it was on a vw forum or an ice forum. sorry couldn't help more.

the map software for win ce is slightly older, albeit the maps are as new as available so I wouldn't worry about that.

The android one hasn't been available for ages, its definitely interesting though, my concern around android is that it can be flaky, it can be really bad or very good, this unit despite being sold by Eonon isn't even branded, in fact it looks exactly the same as some shoddy ebay units ive seen else where, id say its a bit of a leap going for it.

wince has been around for donkeys years and doesn't have all the bells and whistles, its limited in the software dept but make no mistake, it works and works well, I do like the modular idea of the cables on the back of the android one, its pretty tight in that hole when fitting it, its not hard getting all the wires out the way but being able to disconnect it would be handy.

I have the D5162 and its good, I wouldn't bother with the GM, the GA.... I dunno, potentially its very good, but then again, it might not be, I seriously doubt there will be any software development so youd be stuck with any bugs.

agree with Darren here. He is a big help with these units and knows his stuff. Hopefully get around to getting one of these very soon when I get a few pounds saved up.

I was decided to go with Eonon too on my next stereo upgrade, and also convert to Mk2,5, but I stumbled upon this:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/WITSON-Android-OS-4-2-Capacitive-screen-CAR-DVD-GPS-for-FORD-FOCUS-C-MAX-FIESTA/2039189618.html

which seemed like a good option too, as I didn't like the issues that were present on WinCE Eonon stereos and I didn't know if they're there also on Android ones...

And having a different (WinCE) stereo now, with all the wiring for GPS, rear view cam, etc... present, for me it'll be a straight swap. So I'm not converting to Mk2,5 dash...

But, of course, they also offer Mk2,5 shaped stereo too:

(and I believe it's available in black too)

As someone who already has a WinCE stereo, the Android is the only way to do an upgrade (although I'm more of an Apple guy :D ), but if this will be your first upgrade from OEM stereo, you probably won't make a mistake with Eonon stereo, either WinCE or Android..and I would go for the more "loaded" one :)

Thanks for the replies guys. Is it possible to get TomTom on the WinCE versions ? I'm just used to TomTom and would prefer it is all. Good to know you can fully update the maps with the stock application on the WinCE version too.

There isn't a "stock" application as such, the HU comes without anything unless you buy it, if you buy the maps from them (don't bother) then I think its similar to co-pilot, only not that good. Make no mistake, the updated maps you get are just the same maps as all the rest and all technically illegal.

You can get TomTom on it however, it is a bit more of a pain in the bum though and the software has long since stopped being developed, it was never that good at landscape mode and the maps have to be assigned to the software which isn't exactly easy.

I used to use TomTom and thought it was great but ive since changed to iGo 2.4 primo on this HU as its had some more TLC over the years and does 99% of what tomtom used to do. Also, adding new maps to igo is much easier! The look of iGo primo is similar to tomtom.

I couldn't possibly comment of how to get these things on an Open forum though since its probably against the rules, Tomtom and all the rest are not allowed to be distributed of course where there is a will, there is a way ;)

PMs are handy!

Agree with Darren on this. TomTom is not longer developed and iGO is very good when talking about WinCE software...personally I loaded it with Nokia's HERE maps from Q3 2014 and I'm good for another half year. Also, since I'm upgrading to Android stereo, I'm planning to use Sygic on it, since I bought it for my previous phone. Also, PMs are good way to get more "info" about the GPS software from me :)

Oh, and btw, I did get some GPS software already on SD card with my stereo, it was earlier version of iGO (I guess that's why I sticked with it since then).

I got this one at Christmas and i love it:

Got my reverse camera wired in and everything.

Decided to go with the Android head unit, looks like there's a variety of different GPS apps with updated offline maps, but typically its out of stock at the moment on the Eonon UK site. The oval fascia trim I received had a scratch and it, received another one and that had a scratch elsewhere too, just can't win ! When I finally get everything sorted il slap some pics up :)

yes please do add some pics when all is installed. It would be nice to see more examples of these units in the focus but I don't think I have ever saw the android version anywhere so it will be a first. should be a good ob over all.

Yesterday, I received my Android unit from WITSON...it's for the pre-facelift, but the interface is pretty much the same. I only connected it to the power source at home, didn't tried it in the car yet, I'm going to do it probably today...from the first testing, the system appears stable, no lags, to reboots, interface is very user-friendly, all the functions seems to be working, however it didn't recognize my LTE USB modem, so I'll probably have to get older 3G-only version at work (perks of working in IT :D )...it has connected to my home WiFi without any trouble, however my unit doesn't have official play store...so installing apps is little tricky, but not impossible...as GPS app, there was iGO (I won't go into details about legality of the app), but I switched it to Sygic, as that's my favourite GPS app.

If needed, I can post some pics from installing the unit...it's not Eonon, but the software will be probably very similar...
