As far as I'm aware just stays where it is doesn't have a home so to speak just tye wrap out of the way

Was similar on the ST170, it had an air temperature sensor of some sort just sat in the engine bay cable-tied to the battery box. Didn't look tidy at all

Bit more googling about it seems to suggest it's for monitoring the under-bonnet temperatures and brings the radiator fan on if needed.

Not surprisingly a lot of people think it's some nasty mod done by a previous owner ;)

As far as I remember this sensor was installed on some engine types during a recall

Ok, is there a way of findin out if this was a recalled engine mod???

I too had the sensor it is to switch the fan on if the temp after switch off got too high it should be 90% wrapped up with other wiring then it just hangs loose doesn't plug in anywhere you can cable tie it neatly up away from the engine

The cable-tied sensor wa sthe same on both my ST170's, an 02 plate and then a 53 plate. The 02 one was one of the first batches released when Ford launched the ST170, it had a few other recalls done before I gave up with it and traded it in but the sensor was there from day 1.
