Chip In Paintwork

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I'm really hoping you can offer some advice. I had a chip on my 61 plate focus on the paintwork for the boot right by the plastic trim for the boot latch to open the boot. The chip appears to have been created by that plastic trim chafing or rubbing against the paintwork on the metal.

Concerned about rust etc (and because the car is now out of warranty) I purchased a touch up pen and over the weekend cleaned up the area and applied both the paint and laquer to the chip. Trying my hardest to keep the new paint confined to just the chips itself. You could see the work if you were looking for it but at least it was now covered etc.

Job done.

Or so I thought.

Today I have noticed that the paint immediately above the chip (about 3mm) is starting to come away. Presumably the rubbing on the newly applied paint is now pushing up the paint further up. What should I do? Do I peel off the paint coming away and apply more touch up paint? Or is this going to just mean that when this dries it will push the paint off further up and so on?

Am I better removing the trim and filing down the edge so that it no longer rubs? How difficult is it to remove this?

If you have any thoughts I'd really appreciate your input.

ford have a 10 y ant corrosion and paintwork guarantee you could ask; at least I think its 10y

I did try that and had no joy. Firstly because the trim has caused damage (damage isn't covered under corrosion) and secondly because in order to maintain the warranty the small print states that you have to pay a Ford dealer to inspect the vehicle every 2 years, which I haven't done.

In truth the corrosion warranty seems like a complete waste of time. It is only valid if there are no chips, scrapes etc to the vehicle (because that's how the rust "gets in") and if you pay to have the car checked every 2 years. Chances are that a car with immaculate paint will not have corrosion issues anyway. Besides which, what car gets to 10 years of age with no stone chips?

It's water based paint seems to scratch, chip and mark way too easily, every time I look at mine it has a new chip.

The old oil based was much more durable.

Hi I have had the same problem as you what I did is put a small piece off duck tape behind the trim just to stop the trim rubbing on the paint work good luck
