Brake pedal travel

Featured Replies

On my 51 focus petrol the brake pedal travels about a half inch before you can start to feel the car brake, also if you pump the brake you hear this noise like air escaping( my mate says this happens in his megane coupe it's air from a gaiter type thing) also while pumping the brake the engine rev changes(rev higher) then drops and makes the interior lights flickr. The reason this makes my concerned as when i've been driven my dads car and my uncles car the peday doesnt travel much before braking and is quite hard. Any advice as I have been driving long and this is only my 4 car I've drove.

1/2" is quite normal, you need a little slack in the system to prevent everything locking up when it gets hot, if you have ABS expect more, if you pump the pedal then you will deplete the vacuum in the servo, this will make your engine rev's alter as the vacuum is produced in the inlet manifold (diesels will have a seperate vac pump).

Try turning the engine off then pump the brake until the pedal goes hard, all the vacuum gone from the servo, how much travel now? While pressing the brake pedal start the engine, the pedal should slowly drop about an inch or so as the vacuum builds up and assists your foot pressure, a simple check that your servo is operating. ;)
