Radiator Fan Confussion, Please Help !!!!

Featured Replies

Hi, Always wanted a ford focus, the mk1, don't like the newer shape, its just personal preference, so I finally managed to get my hands on an old one, its a Focus 1.8 16v Zetec, 5 door, 1999, in light green, picked it up dead cheap with a px on my Peugeot 306.

Now I guess for you guys to fully understand this, you'll need to see the pictures.

I will try and put this as simple as I can, first of all, the bigger fan works, but only when I remove the fan switch and short the pins with a piece of wire, (so far), ive never got the cars temperature gauge above half way point to see if it kicks in itself, however all pipes are getting hot, still touchable, not red hot, I can understand the smaller fan not working as I can hardly turn the the blades by hand, I guess its sized, not a problem as I can pick a new set of fans up fairly cheap and they appear quite easy to fit.

however, my main question is what is the fan switch doing attached here: the battery box ? surely it should be immersed in the coolant somewhere, however I am unable to locate where it belongs, google is no help here, tried that for days.

The fan switch recently went on my Peugeot, and that was screwed into the thermostat housing.

you will also see a fuse coming from it, and the its connected direct to the positive on the battery ?????

is this someones rubbish repair job, and how should it be wired up correctly ?

If someone could possibly help me with this I would greatly appreciate your time.

Thanks

Sean

its ecu controlled so its not in the radiator it uses info from the coolant and head temp sensor to determine overheating

next thing on the addenda is a good old steam clean, oil change, water change, and timing belt, needs 1 new tyre, reverse light bulb, front brake disc's and last but defo not least, it has an MOT advisory for lower suspension arm bushes, the wishbones I think.

So far done, fuel filters, air filer, power steering hoses and fluid, but I did only buy it on Saturday.

On some early focus MK1 versions this sensor is part of a modification. Later focus MK1 versions did have it as standard.

In some extreme situations (hot ambient temperatures, no wind and a hot engine for example) the temperature under the bonnet can reach extremely high temperatures. This sensor activates the fan to cool the engine bay if needed.
