I've recently got myself a 2006 1.4 Focus. Spotless car, 65,000km on it, very happy.

I'm wondering about the timing belt. I believe the recommended renewal is after 100,000 miles or 8 years. Which is fine. I need to get it done if it is the original.

The thing is, while there are none of the usual dated markings of timing belt renewal, there is no cover over the belt (as I believe there should be?). What is this most likely to mean? That the belt was done, or would it be a case that somebody would remove it to check the belt or other reason? I know we can't say for sure, but I'm sure a mechanic would know the most likely scenario here.

Secondly, if there is supposed to be a cover over the belt, how good of an idea is it to run the car without it?

Which belt are you referring to? if it is the auxiliary belt that drives the alternator/waterpump/AC/power steering then that does not have a cover over it. the Timing Belt (or Cambelt) that drives the cam and crankshaft should have a timing cover over it.

If you don't know the service history I'd get the belt changed ASAP. The cover does help to prevent dirt and debris getting onto it which would shorten its life so I'd advise you get one fitted at the same time.

I will be chatting to a good Ford mechanic friend in a few days (and getting the belt done). But as above, I thought I'd try here now for any competent opinions on the most likely reason the cover was removed. And how important/advisable it is to replace with a new one at the change.

Haynes Manual recommends 80,000mls . I have a 2004 1.4 , and did mine at this mileage . It might be wise to check if the water pump needs to be changed as well !!
