Upgrading To Bigger Alloys Question

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I've never changed an alloy before and I'm wanting to purchase a sweet new set of 4 ST alloys but they are 18".

My current tyres read:205/55 A16

Would I no longer be able to use these tyres? How is the handling affected too.

Nope you will not be able to use those tyres

I think you will need something like a 235/40/18 like what I have on mine

Shouldnt be any issues, turning circle may be a little reduced and ideally you should fit a steering rack limiter kit to stop the tyres from rubbing on the wheel arch liner when on full lock

Coincidently i have one for sale, brand new direct from ford

I purchased it with the intention of fitting bigger alloys to my old focus but I ended up buying a mondeo with 18s as standard so the limiter kit is going spare

How much did your tires cost? Really a steering rack limiter is that not excessive for 2 inch bigger alloys?

the tyres will be around the £100 each mark for a good quality one

About 100quid a corner is about right yes

Currently fitted to mine are Rapid p609 on the front and Hankook v12 evo on the rear (could be the other way round lol cant remember which) couldnt tell you how much they cost as they are what was on the car when I bought it. Think the rapids have a higher rating. Still got plenty of tread left but when time does come to change them I'll probably go for Avons.

Some people dont bother with the limiter kit but I was assured by Clive and Lenny it's necessary and it's only 20quid so you may as well fit it. If your spending a few hundred quid on sexy new alloys n good tyres then an extra 20quid is nout really

He has told me his alloys and wheels are Bridgestone Potenza 225/40/R18. How much difference does the 40 make? Is this a good deal for 4 st alloys £400? Decent tires apparently

18" wheels really fill the arches and jazz up the appearance of the car.

Limiters are essential or else the wheels will hit the arches and liner causing damage.

You will find the turning radius gets larger but it's easy to get used to.

225/40 means wider wheels but lower profile tyres.

You may find the ride becomes a bit firmer too.

The 40 is the depth of the tyre as a percentage of it's width, so a 235/40 is taller and wider than the 225/40. In theory, as different brands of tyre will measure differently even when sizes are stated the same.
