Rear Wiper Permanently On

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've got a bit of an issue with the rear wiper on my '06 Focus Estate.

Last week, I noticed the wiper was playing up when it was switched on. It would do half a wipe (stay vertical on the rear screen) then a few seconds later it would continue to wipe - the same happened on every cycle. I also noticed when traveling at 70mph, the speedo quickly jumped to 76mpg within a few seconds and on 2 occasions the car wouldn't accelerate for a few seconds.

Today however, the rear wiper is now permanently on regardless of whether it's switched on or not and is extremely irritating on an 1hr journey.

Any idea what could be causing it?

Wot I would do is check the fuses and especialy the relay cos that sounds like a relay or electric problem to me,

Thanks Ian, I've checked the fuse but no issue there. Do you know which relay it is?

The relay is an internal component of the CJB/GEM and not replaceable.

I wonder what wet-behind-the-ears designer thought that was a good idea?

Could it be the wiper motor?

Could it be the wiper motor?

Possible but highly unlikely.

You can check the relay out if you have a voltmeter.

Disconnect the rear wiper motor connector.

Piin 2 of the rear wiper motor connector should be 0 volts (ground) with the rear wiper stalk set to off.

It should alternate between 12v and ground with the rear wiper stalk turned on

From your symptoms I think you will find you have 12v permanently supplied to this wire, which is fed from the relay.

A bit obvious but forgot to say, you will need the ignition switch at position II when checking the voltage.
