Cam Belt

Featured Replies

Hi, I have had my car coming up to 12 months, from what I can work out it's only ever had oil changes and consumables like brake pads, my power steering pipe blew last month and The AA guy said they were recalled for this, the garage that repaired it said the same and fitted an upgraded pipe.

The car is 5 years 9 months old, has just passed 40k miles.

When I book it in for MOT I am going to have a major service, would you change the cam belt yet, I know 8 years and 100k but the car is almost 6 years old and it's got to last me a while.

Cheers

I wouldnt change the cam till at least. 40 seems way too early. Say 70-80k at the earliest as a precautionary. I didnt change mine in my focus till 98k

cheers, it was the age more than the mileage, I know they say 8 years, but Google seems to find some that go before,

Thanks for the info.

ive hit 70 and am now looking to get it done in the next year, 40 seems way yearly, even ford suggests 60 odd

As Charlie says, 80k or 8 years and you will be fine.

Yup think mine was 8 years old when I did it and had 98k on

Mechanic said hair line cracks was starting to show on the old belt

OP you definitely have at least 2 years before you wanna think about changing it

I wouldnt be changing it yet either. My cmax was due this year as it was coming up to 8yrs old but had only covered 57k. I was going to have it done but sold the car last week. Wifes punto was changed with 16k on the clock as it had reached the 5yr recommended schedule. I think that manufacturers err on the side of caution with the schedules anyway although rather than risk it i tend to stick to what they specify.

Cheers guys!

Its not the belt that goes its the belt tensioner that goes taking the belt with it as said it seems a bit early but with any tensioner who knows
