Mk1 Handbrake

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am having a pig of a job getting the handbrake to work (drum type). It has a new cable, all the components are free & moving, there appears to be no wear on the drum (no lip) A the shoes seem to have plenty of life in them (see pic).

Has anyone got any suggestions please?

Are the shoes moving/making contact with the footbrake?

  • Author

Hi,

When used as a footbrake they seem to work fine. I moved the adjusters s that they were binding (I know this is wrong), but even then If I pulled the lever up seriously hard, when I tried to drive away the car would dip @ the rear but would not hold. If I pull the handbrake while in motion, the wheels do not lock up even on a relatively gravely surface.

Someone mentioned to me that there are two different sizes in shoes. How do I find out if this is correct as Ebay can be quite vague when buying even if you ask.
