Scuttle Panel Not Flush With Glass

Featured Replies

Hi, minor annoyance: my scuttle panel on the drivers side is raised. It doesn't leak but leaves seeds and other bits of rubbish get stuck down there.

It seems to be the original windscreen.

Anyway to flatten it? It's fine everywhere else just the drivers side corner.

Thanks.

Im sure there are clips on the underside. My cmax had the same problem until my mechanic mate took it off and refitted it properly when working on my suspension.

It's going for service in a month or so, I'll get them to take a look.

Cheers

I have the same issue, it's very annoying.

Could it be that the heat from continuous, direct sunlight is warping the plastic? It used to be fine...

The scuttle panel is a tricky thing to get fitted properly - it clips into a retainer strip which runs along the bottom of the windscreen.

But it's a pretty poor design really - if the panel has raised up at all and come out of the windscreen channel then pushing it back down is just as likely to push the retainer off the bottom of the windscreen instead of making the 2 parts clip back together. That way it'll always sit up with a gap there instead of being flush. Also the retainer strip can become loose on the bottom of the screen so even when it's pushed back into place it comes away again.

Best way I've found is to take the wipers off, remove the 6 clips securing the front edge of the panel in the engine bay then you can take the panel off and see what state the retainer strip is along the bottom of the windscreen. Pretty much a blind fit trying to get the scuttle panel and windscreen strip to meet up, it's often easier to remove the windscreen strip, fit it to the scuttle panel then fit the whole lot onto the car matching up the strip with bottom of the windscreen.

Tigerseal or similar can do a good job holding the strip in place on the windscreen but you run the risk of when someone removes it the centre laminate of the windscreen can be pulled away with it.

Also be careful if you're trying to apply lots of pressure pushing the scuttle panel into the windscreen strip if it's already on the car, risk being you could possibly crack the windscreen.

I found an old thread called "will this cause problems? Scuttle panel" there are loads of comments from people with brand new cars with this problem on driver's side only. With Ford denying it's an issue as it's not actually a seal?

Some unhappy people on there!

So I guess I will live with it. If I start messing it will end in tears!

Thanks for the advice.

The fitting strip doesn't run the whom length so either edge will raise the windscreen rubber Is a drain this drain runs under that section so it can't be pressed to the window and flat
