More Bluetooth And Voice Control Problems

Featured Replies

Hello,

I don't think my particular problems have been covered elsewhere, sorry if they have but I have looked everywhere!

Just retro fitted Bluetooth module, loom, microphone and voice control button to my 2007 Focus Ghia. All gear installed ok.

Used ELMCONFIG to "tick" voice control on HEC page.

Problem 1: pressing "voice" button does nothing however pressing the "mode" button puts radio into voice control mode ("voice" is displayed on radio and " voice control listening" on dash). However I don't hear anything from the radio, when I speak, nothing happens and eventually the radio times out and voice control switches off.

Problem 2: I can dial out using the head unit, the call is connected and I can speak to the car and be heard by the person I am calling, however I cannot hear them. In addition to this my AUX socket no longer works.

Problem 3: I had thought I could sort out some of these problems using ELMCONFIG however when I try to "talk" to the module it comes up with an error message.

I hope someone will be able to help, I can supply error and part codes if it helps but didn't want to make the initial post any longer!

Harry

Which Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system did you retrofit?

There were 2 different Bluetooth/Voicecontrol systems. The old system is used on the Focus MK2 and very early MK2.5 (until about 04-2008). This is a mono system which can not be updated. This system uses a dedicated Phone audio input on the radio.

The newer Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system is used on the Focus MK2.5 (from about 04-2008). This is a stereo system which can be updated by a Ford dealer. There were 2 versions of this system. Bluetooth/Voicecontrol only and the Ford Sound& Connect system (Bluetooth/Voicecontrol with USB, Ipod and Bluetooth Audio support). This system uses the AUX input of the radio (this is not noticeable).

The wiring, modules and radio's of the old and newer Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system are different and are not compatible. A 2007 Focus MK2 should have the old Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system. All parts need to be of the correct system. If 1 of the parts is for the different system it will simply not work.

If you can post the part numbers of the radio, wiring loom and Bluetooth/Voicecontrol module I can tell if they are (or are not) compatible.

Next to this the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol module needs to be configured for the Focus MK2/MK2.5. If the module is currently configured for another Ford model it will not work correctly also. The VOICE button not working indicates an incorrect configuration. However this should not affect the audio output of the module.

Thanks for the reply,

You are right, mine is an older MK2 and so I went for what I believe to be
one of the older modules, FINIS 1445958. It came with the loom FINIS 1467152.
It has previously been used in a 2006 Focus (and worked!) but I am told it came
originally from a 2007 Fiesta.

The radio part number is VP6M2F-18C821-AE it is the Sony second generation
head unit (single CD). I have the AUX socket in the glove box which worked
prior to the retrofit.

I wasn’t too surprised that the voice button didn’t work properly because I expected
to have to make some changes to the module configuration however I cant access
it on ELMCONFIG, I get an error message. I have used FORSCAN to check for error
codes and it detects the module and shows it free of codes.

I have a distant memory of someone on here having to make changes to the
wiring loom to sort out the AUX socket after a Bluetooth retrofit but I am not
sure if it was to achieve something “custom” or just to get it working as
standard.

I don’t know if there is another program I can try like ELMCONFIG that would
allow me to make changes to the module, however I would have thought the
settings are pretty close as it came from 2006 Focus. Perhaps the latest
version of ELMCONFIG is “too new” to access these old modules?

Some people have needed to upload their VIN to the module after it has been
used on a different car, do you think this is an issue or would none of the
features work if it was unhappy with the stored VIN? (I cant do this or read the DTC codes using ELMCONFIG)

Any help greatly appreciated!

The Bluetooth/Voicecontrol module with part number 1445958 (4M5T-19G488-AV) is indeed for the old Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system. This module should be correct for your car.

The wiring loom with part number 1467152 (6S6J-14C007-AA) is the original retrofit wiring loom for the Focus MK2. This wiring loom should also be correct.

VP6M2F-18C821-AE is not the radio part number. This is the part number of the CD player/changer mechanism inside the radio.

Is this an original Focus MK2 radio or did it came from a different Ford model? Original Sony radio's from different Ford models are technically different from the Sony radio of the Focus MK2. This often causes many problems because of incompatibilty. Next to this there are also differences between the GEN 2 and GEN 3 Sony radio's. The GEN 2 and GEN 3 Sony radio's look identical from the outside but are technically different. The GEN 2 Sony radio is based on the old Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system and the GEN 3 Sony radio is based on the newer Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system.

The type of radio can only be determined by the part number of the radio.

As far as I remember it should be no problem to diagnose the old type Bluetooth/Voicecontrol module with the ELMconfig software. However an ELM327 interface with a Baudrate of 500.000 Kbps is required.

My experience is that the VIN number is no problem on the Sony radio. As far as I know the VIN number problem only applies to the original MK2 Denso Sat Nav radio. In the past I sold a lot of different Bluetooth/Voicecontrol modules. On all modules I changed the VIN number to zero's. All modules did work perfectly even without the correct VIN number of the car it was installed into.

The AUX problem will probably be caused by missing AUX wiring of the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol retrofit wiring loom. Too solve this you have to remove the small connector containing the AUX wiring (this connector is probvably white) from the original Quadlock (radio) connector and insert it in the quadlock connector of the retrofit wiring loom.

I have uploaded a picture of the top of my radio, hopefully you will see the
relevant part code there.

I have only had the car a month but as far as I know it is the original
radio. I have the info from the radio display if that would help (ie the
firmware version etc).

I have set my ELMCONFIG to audodetect the best connection speed and it
settles at 1000000kps.

I will try the AUX plug swap in the Quadlock. Am I right in thinking I should
be able to have the hands free AND auxillary input working even with this old
style module? I shouldn’t need to sacrifice the auxiliary input for the phone
audio from the module should I?

Thanks for your help, Its nice to be able to discuss it with someone, most
people seem to be working on USB or navigation system upgrades and not this old
technology, I just want to be able to answer a phone call and impress the kids
by talking to the car! :)

Incidentally I think it was your parts diagram I found when researching the
parts, it was very helpful thank you!

The part number of the radio should be on a sticker at the side of the radio. There is also a coloured stripe on this sticker. the colour of this stripe stands for the age and software version of the radio.

However based on the production date on top of the radio it should be the correct type as long as it is an original Focus MK2 radio. If it is a Mondeo MK4 or S-max/Galaxy radio it may explain some of your problems.

The bluetooth/Voicecontrol system does not affect the AUX input function.

Thanks Wilco,

I will pull the radio out and have a look for the other sticker when I try the AUX plug swap in the Quadlock. (do you think I may have a break in part of the retro loom or is it common to have to swap the plugs like this?)

In the meantime I have the following info from the radio display in the order it is output, this may be what you were expecting to see:

BL: 02-05-01

CD: 2.1.1D

FB: 06.00

EQ: 12

ALIGN

09/02/2007

SN: S0CD1X7V048179

CS: 36B339A8

Can you tell me what the parameters are? i can guess at serial number and build date etc but am unsure of some of the others.

I will also try talking to the module using different connection speeds on the ELM interface to see if that makes a difference. I have also managed to download an older version of ELMCONFIG that i will try. (getting desperate now!)

I cant help thinking that if I could only access the settings on the module I could sort this out in a couple of clicks, it is very frustrating!

Hopefully you will be able to tell me if the radio is indeed the original unit.

OK, I had chance to pull the radio out today, here is the picture of the
sticker you mentioned:

post-64753-0-54719700-1432325965_thumb.j

Is this the type of radio you would expect to see in my Focus?

While the radio was out I swapped the white AUX plug in the quadlock connectors
and this has restored the auxiliary audio input to the radio. On the original
plug there were three wires as you would expect (Left, Right and shield) however
on the retro fit loom there are two additional wires that will no longer be connected
after this swap as you can see in the following picture:

Do you think I should try to pull the pins out of the unused plug and insert
them into the plug that is now going into the radio? I am not sure what they do
or if they are required for this arrangement.

It would be nice to find some schematics for all of this gear, unfortunately
the ones pinned to this forum are for the later cars.

Do you think there may be problems with other parts of this loom that are
stopping the module working correctly? I am surprised that I should have had to
swap these AUX plugs over, I thought this loom was supposed to be plug and play
for a range of different cars (I am glad it has cure one problem however!)

Here is a screen shot of ELMCONFIG:

It shows the response when I try to
talk to the SRM. I have tried different connection speeds and two different
versions of the program. I have run out of things to try now and am not sure
what can be done to get this working...

Your radio with part number 7M5T-18C939-JD (Finis 1492744) is an original Focus MK2 single-CD Sony radio which is produced from 26-03-2007 until 03-09-2007. This means your radio is also the correct type of radio for the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system you retrofitted.

The 2 extra wires in the white connector are the audio wires from the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol module to the radio. These should be connected to Pin 3 (Mono 2 +) and Pin 9 (Mono 2 -) and must be connected to the radio. Pin 3 should be connected to Pin 3 of the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol connector and Pin 9 should be connected to Pin 4 of the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol connector.

As far as I know there are no schematics of the old Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system available on the internet. All available schematics are based on the newer system. I have some early MK schematics but these are made before the release of the old Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system and do not contain any information about this system.

I never tried myself to diagnose an old type Bluetooth/Voicecontrol module using the ELMconfig program. The old module types possibly may not be supported by the ELMconfig program. If this is the case the module can only be configured correctly by a Ford dealer.

Thanks for the confirmation on the radio.

Are you able to point me in the right direction for the pinouts for the radio and module so I can check my loom is correct. As mentioned before everything I find is for the newer systems.

I have seen some people with similar problems to me ie no audio, talk of a plug in loop connector. Is this only relevant to the newer systems that have the wiring already fitted to the cars main loom?

It's looking more like I might have to take it to a dealer to be setup. It will probably take 30 seconds, I wonder what the cost might be!

The plot thickens!

I hope you are not all board of this yet, hopefully you can help me and
others get to the bottom of this!

I have spent some quality time with a multimeter going through my retrofit
loom. What I have discovered is that the auxiliary socket in the glove box is
now routed to the SRM on pins 5, 6 and 23 (left, right and screen).

Pins 3 and 9 (on the Quadlock C connector) in the car loom are routed to
pins 3 and 9 (on the Quadlock C connector) that plugs into the radio. They completely
bypass the SRM.

What I think is the output of the SRM on pins 37, 38 and 19 are routed to
the original Auxillary input on the radio on pins 5, 6 and 11 of the Quadlock C
connector.

The upshot of all this is, I think it is wired incorrectly! I don’t know if
someone has fiddled with it and modified it to suit their needs (it is second hand) or it is the
wrong loom for this application.

I have seen schematics online for the newer cars and this is how the wiring
is laid out, ie the auxiliary socket is fed through the SRM and the output to
the radio is stereo.

I thought with these older modules the auxiliary input was wired straight to
the radio bypassing the SRM and that the output of the SRM was mono and not
stereo.

Does anyone have any views on this? I could really use an old style
schematic or even the pinouts of the old SRM. I can start chopping the loom
about but I would rather not if I have misunderstood how this lot is supposed
to work.

I think I still need to go to the Dealer to get them to reprogram the SRM so
the voice button works but I want to make sure I have done as much as possible
myself before they start the clock!

I found out today they would charge £54 for the first half an hour of
diagnostic time.

  • 2 weeks later...

On request the schematics I made of the old Mono Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system. This schematic is based on the Focus MK2 and very early MK2.5 with the 6000CD, Sony or Travelpilot EX radio.

All done!

Thanks to Wilcos help I have been able to rewire my loom and get my SRM talking to my radio. The voice control is now working as well as the Bluetooth hands free. The retrofit loom I had was in fact for the newer style module. Wilcos schematic was just what was needed to rewire it. I still can't get ELMCONFIG to talk to the module but the only problem with this is that my voice button does not work, however the mode button triggers voice control instead, I can live with that!
