Coolant leak?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2001 Focus 1.8LX. A week ago my radiator fan kept coming on, and I noticed the coolant level was below minimum. I topped it up with coolant and water and the temp gauge reduced and the fan stopped coming on. The only problem is the coolant level is low again, but no fan or high gauge, I'm confused?

There is no sign of a leak on the road or when I look under the car, any ideas what it could be?

Not sure about in a focus, but I once was the unfortunate owner of a Citroen BX, which also lost coolant, but didn't dribble any under the car while parked (it dribbled every other type of fluid but not water while parked), turns out it was only leaking when the engine and coolant was hot (i.e. the car was on the move).

Though your coolant may have been so low it caused an air pocked somewhere in the system, since you've topped it up that air pocket may have been expelled (which would cause your coolant level to apparently drop) but at least the engine itself is being cooled properly and doesn't heat up as much as before,, this is only speculation though so take it as nothing more than theory.

Top the coolant up again and keep a very close eye on it (also carry a bottle of water in the back) also if you get a chance take a look under the engine bay and look for any signs of moisture or leakage.
