I'm new on the forum. Apologies if I've posted in the wrong place.

I was hoping for some advice please, this is probably an add-on to something you've discussed before!

My girlfriend has a 06 plate Focus TDCi Sport that's done 100k miles. We think the dual mass flywheel is on the way out - the car clanks at idle, then this stops when the clutch is pressed.

A local Ford dealer has quoted £1800 to replace it. A local independent says £1400.

We live in Chepstow in South East Wales.

Does anyone know of any good independent Ford specialists in South Wales/Gloucestershire/Bristol we could get a quote from (hopefully less than a dealer, and more knowledgeable than a non-specialist garage)?

Ford have also told us that the cam belt needs replacing at 100k and that will cost £800!

I was hoping that we could get the work done and keep the car going for many more miles.

Do you know of any other things that need doing at about this mileage, or that commonly go wrong that we could get repaired at the same time - hopefully 1 big job in the garage will be cheaper than a few smaller jobs over time.

is your engine the 1.8 TDCI or 1.6 TDCI?

There is a guy I used to go to when I worked in Cheltenham, called Sheppard Auto Repairs. really great guy, he is an ex-Ford mechanic.

He quoted me around £650 for a genuine Ford (LUK) clutch kit and dual mass flywheel. Being a trader he gets 50% off the prices for ford parts, and passes the discount to the customers.

if your Cambelt has not been changed then that would need replacing too. give him a ring for a quote for that.

if you have the 1.8 TDCI then the flywheel is something that goes around that mileage, i have had mine changed too, new flywheel/clutch kit and cambelt and you should be good to go for many miles :) you should also get the suspension inspected, the lower control arms would also wear out and need replacing

If the DMF is deteriorating then the starter motor will have to be inspected for metal filings.

Sorry, but don't know too much about DMF and fingers crossed I won't need to for a while at least.}

£1800 is way over the top for a clutch and flywheel. I had the 3 piece clutch kit replaced under warranty on my focus and I asked how much they'd charge retail and they said £800. I can't see a flywheel costing £1000 with minimal extra labour. That was at a ford main dealer.

I had my cambelt and water pump replaced at 106K on my 1.8 TDCi for £160.

The same garage has quoted £650 for clutch/DMF change as it's showing signs of wear.

look like you can get a replacement clutch kit for £450 so they are expensive. Would have though £1350 for a day labour is a bit expensive. I would have thought that <£1000 for a clutch

£400 or less from eurocarparts, get it yourself, 5 hrs labour at whatever the rate you can get, dealer £450 +vat . independant. probably £230 +vat., and some transmission oil.

so no reason why you cant get it done for£700 all in for clutch and flywheel

Ian's post above pretty much sums up the costs involved. The Slavs cylinder should always be replaced anyway and is normally part of a clutch kit.

Ok thanks for info mate i will have a look at getting the parts from eurocarparts and look for a decent mechanic trying to avoid ford or Mr.clutch as they charge a lot of labour

Shame you weren't closer, I have quoted a couple of guys £500 to do them. Clutch kit, slave cylinder, gearbox oil seals, gearbox oil and new hub bolts.

What are the main signs of wear to the dmf. All I have is a clicking noise that comes from the clutch pedal. No other noise is present and clutch feels the same when pressing down.

Out of curiosity, when does the clicking noise occur?

I wud say half way when pressing. been told it is a common fault on mk6 fiesta and a clutch pedal clip is needed

ive had that click noise too for over a year, not too worried about it. its on the pedal itself

Hope ur right mate. Been told it's probably the dmf. Or the release bearing

have a listen, if the noise is under the footwell then itll be the clutch pedal spring/key, if not the its probably the gearbox mounts, or inside the clutch/dmf

Unfortunately I'm having the same problem ive been told by aa it's most likely my cam belt and flywheel

Complete headache this is, I'm based in Birmingham if anyone knows any reputable places that won't try and have my pants down
