My Mods (practical/boring)

Featured Replies

Well I've owned my focus since March and so far being a ford owner is all good.

The focus has been a serious down size compared to my previous motor so I've had to make a few changes to make sure the family car can still fulfill it's many roles.

First I fitted a mobius dash cam followed by a travall dog guard (also gives extra secure storage space).

Then yesterday I fitted set of ford cross/roof bars, now I'm just waiting for my thule 532 bike carrier.

Storage space, room for the bikes & winter tyres didn't seem to matter with the pickup - still prefer the focus.

Got to admit these are the type of practical mods I get up to rather than sports styling or sound systems. So far its been Mobius dashcam (like yours but behind the driver's side of the mirror), hard wired mini usb for sat nav, tow hitch for the trailer and bike rack and dpf delete to keep the thing running without future extra cost. I have also configured for one touch windows up/down and deactivated the seat belt warning sound but I woulldn't really class those as proper modifications. Still have the egr blanking plate to fit.

Any one else got ideas on practical (not boring) mods to share with us?

How about some DRL's

Sexy looking AND practical!! ;-)

How about some DRL's

Thank you all for the comments, I've thought of getting some Ford DRL's, possibly wind deflectors & mud flaps but money's an issue at the moment.

Mud flaps and reverse sensors were already fitted when I bought the car at one year old. I wa thinking about wind deflectors as well but I heard some can be pain either by falling off or causing the window to stick so need to do some research. Not sure about DRLs, doesn't really get me excited at all...

Mud flaps are a very worthwhile mod!!

Since fitting mine, I've not had anywhere near as much crap fly up along the body. Especially important when the council keeps insisting on "surface dressing"

The genuine Ford ones are very easy to fit and to be honest, aren't all that obvious (only a real nerd/spotter/member of this 'ere forum would likely spot them).

I got mine on ebay quite cheap. Just avoid Allen Ford - they have a few different ebay user accounts...

EDIT:

Here's the set I bought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351366583123 - about £20 cheaper than Ford, and £10 - £15 cheaper than most other online sources

Thanks for the mud flap link, think I’ll defiantly get a set later on in the year just before the councilcover the road in salt & my black car turns grey/white.

I've used clamair & heko wind deflectors (full sets) in the past & personally I prefer the clamair ones - no creaking & no metal clips to push inside frames (they just pop on).

This time i will only buy the front set as both clamair & heko rear deflectors came off/dropped low on the last sets i had.

I do like DRL's but not sure if the extra cost is worth it, I've survived alright without them in the past & having auto light setting just pops lights on moment weather changes.

Martin I am interested in your dash cam, have you recorded much on it? what do you do, do you have it recording all the time or just activate it at the first sign of trouble?

Hi Malcolm,

I have hard wired the dash cam using a fuse piggy back as recommended by other form members (really simple, easy & cheap), the camera turns on & starts recording as soon as the ignition comes on.

The camera records on a loop (each video clip is 5min long) & overwrites the oldest clip first once the memory card is full (32gb),

you can change various settings, clip lengths etc in the camera settings.

I just leave the camera in the car (fit & forget), every now & again i'll check to make sure still recording correctly & date/time stamp correct.

Video quality is very good & I have downloaded the app on my mobile phone so i can change settings/watch video on my mobile while in the car if need be.

wow that sounds amazing, very good indeed. I am seriously interested in that alright, sounds perfect! great system!!

Just search "Mobius" in the forum & you'll find all the info you need for installing/setup.

The cameras are sold on multiple websites, I bought mine from a model toy/aircraft website due to cheap price & UK supply (just in case there was a problem/need to return).

I have also fitted a super capacitor (bought seperate) to replce the battery, this ensures there are no issues with battery/excessive heat build up inside the car when parked in direct sunlight.

I second that regarding the Mobius - lots of useful information on this forum from about a year ago when I bought and fitted mine. Bought it from China direct from the maniufacturer / main supplier, including mounts but I ended up making my own from a piiece of steel bracket and siliconed it to the windscreen to take up less space. The hard wiring is easy using the piggy back fuse. I still have the original battery and its been in sun and hot weather a lot, and had it recording constantly for very long trips. Always 100% reliable so far.

Finally got my Thule 532 cycle carrier fitted, for anyone who's thinking of getting a roof mounted carrier I can tell you it's very sturdy & easy to assemble /fit.

Ive been in search of a bike carrier for the mk 2.5 without much luck, nothing wrong with a bit of practical though!

Other days I find LEDs are good fun, cheap and cheerful and you can put them all over the place, trick is getting the balance right! might do the ignition barrel, was considering putting some under the door which light up when open, supersized puddle lights! I'm liking the strip above the garage door too.
