Flat Tyre....

Featured Replies

So apologies if this is in the wrong section.....

I just went out for lunch from work in the car..... and on the way to fill up... heard a dull thud from the rear right passenger's tyre.... got out to check after filing up, sure enough, Flat.

Got back to work as quick as I could, now i've never used the self-puncture repair/inflator thingy before, but my car has one of these and no spare tyre, so I decided i'd give it a go.

Connected to wheel, read instructions (not in that order lol).

BAR was reading at 0.5, pump says not to use at under 1 BAR and call for tow/assistance....

Now me being me is thinking, ok maybe it's not ideal to use it, but I do need to get home this afternoon and it's only 5-6 miles home.

Don't really fancy leaving my car here so I gave it a go and it seemed to pump from 0.5 BAR to about 2 BAR in just over 10 minutes.

(1.8 BAR to 2.0 BAR is in the "good" or green range).

Pump says not to use for more than 10 minutes, just wondered why this might be? Overheating or tyre explosion or something?

10 minutes of pumping brings it up to about 2BAR, presumably because the hole in the tyre is too great for the pump to be truly effective, nonetheless, I just need it to get me home.

When I finish work in half hour i'm going to check to see if the pressure is ok, if it needs a bit more topping up then i'll do that and give it a go at getting home.

Wish they'd just give you a spare tyre as I have the tools in the boot of my car (and the know-how), but no.... of course not, it costs less to give you a pot of sealant and a pump.

---UPDATE---

You can mark this as closed.

Tried stopping off at three places on the way home to get an opinion, one was just an MOT centre, the other was busy (2 cars on 2 ramps) and the third was closed and told me to come back tomorrow for a tyre puncture repair.

Got it home and dad took a look, suggested that after i've tried using sealant, we go fill it with air to pump the tyre up until tomorrow when I can get it repaired, took it to two places with the air pump and after initially trying the damaged (punctured) wheel on the air it didn't seem to work at either of the two places, tried it on the other tyres and it inflates those fine, obviously the damage is far too great.

Came back home and my dad has a MK6 Fiesta with a spare wheel (14" 175) which we managed to fit to mine.

Turns out there was a huge nail/bolt through the edge of my tire which left a massive gap in it, the edge of the rim is also very slightly bent.

I will post pics tomorrow.

a lot of new cars dont have spares but theres nothing stopping you from adding it to your car.

you may want to make your own boot tidy which will raise the floor and keep it level - like they have in the focus:

see this thread for info about how you can make your own:
