Noticed my focus was a bit smokey when sat for approx 10 mins on tick-over. After driving at approx 50 for 5 mins, it cleared up.

Didn't think anything of it until today. Had a service done and again, sat for 10 mins and smoking again until run for 5 mins. Smell of burning oil.

Hear a lot of people saying piston rings can be a bit flakey on the mk 1's is it likely a problem on this?

Don't really know much about modern fords, know mine is a 2002 1.6 16v mk 1.5.

It has a black top with Zetec SE written on it (I see people talking about blacktops and silver tops and don't really know so assuming it is a black top) The car has been burnin approx 5 litres of oil per year doing 10000 miles, I have always put this down to being an old focus. And yes I do use 5W30 Fully Synthetic.

If it is the engine on its way out, is it possible for the 1.8 to be put in the 1.6 and does it need much changing?

If it needs an engine change, I would like one with a bit more poke!

Its a blacktop engine the old 1.6 engines are known for using oil stef had one and I do recall he had engine oil use issues so he will know if the above is excessive sounds it to me I think his was about 1 litre it used .....

As for changing it its less hassle to replace like for like there are differences between the 1.8 zetec e and the Yamaha derived zetec se engine that you have for one the exhaust manifold is on the opposite side so you're exhaust wouldn't fit throttle body is in a different place airbox and connections are different

Exactly as above really, I can't remember exactly what my oil consumption was but 1 litre per 1000 miles is probably not far off the mark.

It was 4 and a half years ago I got rid of mine so I can't remember all that much about it.

If I was keeping mine though I would have put another engine in it as it would likely have failed an mot with the amount of smoke getting thrown out the exhaust.

I agree also that the best replacement is a direct replacement. Changing to another engine is a lot of work and hassle that lets be honest, is it really worth doing?
