Focus Smoking On Idle

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I've recently had my injectors changed on my focus and ever since then my car has been smoking. The colour of the smoke is difficult to say as sometimes it's white and sometimes it's black. The car never used to smoke like that with the old injectors so then decided to put the old injectors back in. Car still smokes.

Any ideas as this driving me crazy and my local garage can't find the fault. They've sent the new injectors for testing so should be getting an answer today.

Thanks

Hi welcome :)

sure someone will be along to help

Do you mean you took out the old injectors, and fitted some new ones?

If so, where they programmed into the ECU after this operation? The correction codes for each injector needs to be programmed. You could do this operation yourself with an ELM cable and Forscan.

It probably smoked when you fitted the old injectors back in because you have not kept the same position as before.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Now the problem is after getting the injectors tested, two of them came out faulty. I then bought another two and yet again same problem. I've been to two garages that can do recoding but none of them seem to be successful at coding my car. One garage stated that these focuses do not need to be coded.

please help

which engine?

1.6 tdci. Engine code is G8DB

Bosch injectors

They definitely need coding. A good service should know how to do this, and have the tools at hand (IDS is recommended, but Forscan and ELM-FF2 do the same thing quite good).

Forscan offers the option together with images for the order, and is quite easy to use with Elm 327. You just have to read the correction codes of the top of the injectors, then program them with Forscan in the same order the application tells you to. I'm guessing the cable will set you back about 10-15 pounds and in the UK, and the software is free. You could also get ELM-FF2 and activate some comfort options while you're at it.

Idle vibrations and smoke should decrease, also mpg should be better.

Can you supply a link of all these items please? Also is there anyone in the south west London area that has these. I'll pay you to have my injectors coded because every garage I call say that these Bosch injectors do not require coding. The ecu relearns

I'm sorry, but I don't live in the UK, so don't really know what the best place to get it from would be, but I'm guessing it's ebay or amazon.

Not sure if I can post links like this, but you can search for elm 327 on ebay, and pick any of the ones with a cable. I would advise against the bluetooth or wireless ones, as they aren't very stable. Get a cabled one (I see they are about 7 pounds). Then google for Forscan and download that, it is free. Once you have the cable, install the drivers and play a little with the program, before connecting to the car. It should be pretty easy to understand.

Sorry about this but is it the one with the Usb on the other end

you want something like this: http://www.spanglefish.com/TunnelratElectronics/

i have the same version and it works fine for everything, ive done PCM updates with it and hasnt crashed on me

plus one

never had any bother with theirs and id happily recommend them.

forscan can be found

http://forscan.org/

and ELMconfig can be found

http://civil.iffc.ru/ELMConfig/

(mind to install the runtimepack first)

Would this 100% allow me to recode my injectors?

It would, yes.

I do not advise though on trying PCM updates on th TDCi engine, as I think they are known to cause issues with that. Anything else you should be fine with.

The version above might be fine though, as it seems it's not the cheap chinese clone, but uses FTDI instead which is more stable.

complex but it's sounds like a mixture issue. Maybe the MAF or and air leak. Issue around ideal point to this being the issues. An ODB reader is the way to go. look for error code. Then more complex analysis of the short term fuel trims using the reader.

I was thinking the same thing. Car isn't showing any engine management lights. Engine sounds normal on idle, car performs the way it should when driven. The only problem is the smoke on idle and whilst driving.

Just ordered the cable and will try to recode the injectors. What I'm confused about is why do garages say these cars don't need to be recoded?

the MK2 1.8 TDCi Siemens injectors don't need coding, however the others do (even the MK1 1.8 TDCI). im not sure about the 2.0 TDCI though as that also uses Siemens injection

My car is the 1.6 tdci with the Bosch injectors.

Part number is 0445110259

Yup, and those need programming.

I found that the hard way, when I extracted them to change the copper o-rings. Did not have any smoke, but idle was not very good, lots of vibrations, and increased consumption. I already had the elm, so when I connected it, I saw I mounted the injectors in the wrong order (even though they were labeled - incorrectly). I wrote the codes in the correct order and started the engine.. vibrations were gone, and consumption improved a lot.

I went to a garage recently and the car wasn't accepting the codes. Why is that? Is there a certain order?

Did they use the correct 8 digits codes? Mine look like below

Yes, the codes underneath the part number of the injector right?

Yet it wasn't accepting the code. Could it be his software?

Yes, they are located under the part number.

But be aware that they are composed of two groups:

One with 4 digits

One with 5 digits

First group should be used as it is. Second group, without the last digit.

What s/w did he use? It might be that as well causing the issue.

  • Author

Not entirely sure what software he used. Will have to wait till the cable arrives really.

So I coded in the injectors today and smoke seems to have reduced a lot but still smoking on idle and smell of diesel. Any ideas? Injectors have been tested and they are good.
