Please Please Help Grinding Problems With My St170

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

IM really having a nightmare with my car the garage has now give up on me cause he has not got a clue what it is the garage has fitted on the front of the car 2 new wheel bearings 2 drive shaft he has replaced the discs and pads just in case it was the them being faulty but it stills grinds so he decided to go for 2 new brake calipers so what he done is put a new one on the passenger front took it for a test drive still made the noise so he the put the old one back on the put the new one on the drivers front and took it for a test drive it didint do it going forward but done it going backwards when he got back and said to me its now doing it going backwards i really wanted to scream at this point he is really at the end of saying sorry don't know what the problem is give up. So he said im gonna try one more thing so he clamped the passenger side caliper so it diddint work and took it for a test drive so he only had the drivers side brake working came back still grinding at this point im getting really stressed so he clamps the drivers side brake caliper so only the passenger one is only working takes it for a test drive comes back and says its not making no noise at all going forward or backwards but as soon as he de clamped the caliper for it to work again it made the horrible grinding noise. He has now said to me he really don't know what it is and that's it he dosent know what else to do and sent me on my way. Im really hoping someone reads this and gives me some ideas cause i dont know what direction to go now.

Thank you Darren :(

I think it's a combination sadly. If he clamped the thing, then the pistons won't work so a caliper replacement would be needed, but given he has also changed the pads and disks... It sounds like one if not all have something of a fault..

Is it possible at all to get any video or audio of the sound? When is it making a sound? Turning or going straight. Braking or flowing? Any particular speeds? Any info might help identify the problem no matter how small.

bmw m3 and m4 have a grinding sound sometimes when moving forward or reversing caused by dirt and bits of pebbles getting stuck or wedged up between the brake caliper shield/covers.

I would assume he had a good look while changing the pads but it's worth having a complete look and clean of the brake area of any dirt oil or debris. Also check the rear brake shields/covers and check they are not bent or deformed.

Jack the car up put it on axle stands without the wheels get the wheels spinning and test your brakes if the sounds happen with wheels off.. take care if doing this though
