Why do ford car keys open more than one car ??

The other day me mum accidently picked up my car key (X reg focus) and she was able to open her car door (V reg fiesta) but not start the engine.

I was also able to use her key to open my doors and boot but not start the engine.

Sureley this is a security issue and one key should only be able to open one car ?

Thats not write that there should be one key that fits one car god help if there is any car theifs that are reading this now and i agree this is a security issue.

according to the bloke at ford garage alll ford keys can lock all lock but arent suposed to be able to open them, so youve got a realy strange problem. secondly when i swaped my locks to new ones (from another ford fiesta) i put the drivers side on the passengers side and vise versa when i came to locking it i found only the new key would lock it but both keys would unlock it i.e. any ford key can unlock my car.

My mum and dad have the same problem with their cars, a T reg Focus and an R reg Fiesta. Both sets of keys would open each car.

Now i own an older too Fiesta and im slightly concerned by the issue, as my key will open the Focus also.

Yes, ive got a S and T plate focus and both sets of keys will lock each car but they will not open or start the car

yup id say its a pretty serious issue.

a few weeks back a mate of mine had someone try to break into his car, so when the police came round in the transit they tried the key and it opened the door!!

weird as the fiesta is an R reg and presumably the transit was a bit newer.

When the keys get old and worn they can fit in a number of different locks with similar key blade codes.

Each key has it's own code both for the immobiliser chip and the blade. So if the key opens the door it still won't be able to start the car as it won't recognize the immobiliser chip code

A couple of years ago my mechanic inserted my Ka key into my wife's Escort Mk4's ignition. It did not start the engine but we couldn't get it out of the ignition! It just locked itself in there and wouldn't budge. After inserting pieces of wire, blades, spraying lucrication oil, etc etc, we finally managed to pull it out.

On another note, a few years back I owned an Escort Mk1 and its doors could be opened with a small coin and the ignition could be started with a flat blade screwdriver! :o

JWGWALES is right all Ford keys (pre 2005) can lock all Ford cars. But not open them.

It is a design feature by ford for households that own more than one Ford.So for example if you have got both cars open say to clean them or to swap some stuff over you don't have to have both sets of keys on you.To lock them up afterwards

A sierra that we once had could be unlocked by any ford key. This was because the lock barrel was damaged.

Is there any noticeable damage to both sets of keys?

Some makers have a chip in the key to keep the car from starting with a duplicate, but it should still open the door. Take it back. This happens more than you think.

That is weird, they shouldnt unlock more than one car at all! that is appauling in fact! I know that you have one key for every 100 cars or so, as they just have templates, and code the ignition to the chip.

Glad I got rid of the Ford then... Hope its not an issue on the later cars...

Actually every car manufacturer in the world has this problem - back when cars had two keys, it still happened. You'd figure out you were in the wrong car when your oval key would open the lock, but the square key wouldn't turn the ignition.

If you think of it, there are only so many possible ways to cut a key and have it not wear out to the point of not working over the 10 to 20 year life of an automobile - Ford has sold over a 1,007,000 vehicles this year, as of June. They've been using the same key style for at least 8 years.

The immobilizer / PATS system is the true anti-theft system.

Since your keys actually fit the locks, have some fun with it - program the PATS system in both cars to read both sets of keys.
