Now The Hot Weather Is Finally Here

Featured Replies

Just thought I'd post this as a general info message now the weather has turned again.

Remember - You don't have the right to smash windows yourself unless you see dogs actively suffering.

not just dogs but kids too. why do people leave them in cars i do not know

Good advice. Before I studied law I was an RSPCA Inspector and have dealt with incidents where dogs have died from heat

asphyxiation after being left in cars during weather like this. In one case, the dog had been left in a car which was

parked in direct sunlight whilst the owners spent a few hours at an agricultural show. They thought it sufficient to leave

the widows very slightly open. Before it died, the dog had shredded the inside of the car trying to escape!

Being a dog handler I have this subject close to my heart.

My dogs have air-con while moving and a secondary cooling unit while the engine is off (there is also a rear compartment temperature gauge on my dash) but even then if they are to be left more than 20 minutes I always open the boot so they have free-flowing air.

They always have access to cool water in non-tipping bowls and are never worked past their endurance in hot weather.

If you are going out in hot weather and take dogs with you when you may be away from the car for any period of time - THINK - Do I need to take my dog with me?

After a handler on another Force allowed his 2 working dogs to die in his car while tied up at work we have got very strict on dog carriage regulations and always make the dogs welfare a priority.

I couldn't believe it when I went out for my break at work this morning and almost passed out with the heat. Needless to say tomorrow I'll be digging out a short-sleeved shirt if possible, as well as taking a hay fever tablet.

As regards dogs in hot cars, I will never understand that. It is the same with any animal including cats that may be being transported to and from the vets. People (or most people) take it into consideration with humans but seem to think that animals can cope with being cooped up in a car with no air circulation. Why?!

I hate idiots who do this. they think cracking the window an inch is acceptable...

I have seen at least one article a day locally on this issue and it peeves me off. I also saw an article where an american woman killed her daughter by leaving her in a car. These people should be shot!

Take your dogs in the car - fine. only if you leave both the windows fully open, plenty of water and you have them in plain sight, so if something should go wrong, there are plenty of people around to help.

Seriously, you can buy these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/PetGear-Happy-Pet-Window-Guard/dp/B00422L5AG

ten quid, you can leave the window all the way open and the dogs in the most comfort possible...

The variable weather at the moment lulls dog owners into making incorrect choices.

Today started very wet here and has now gone hot and muggy again.

The weather changes so fast that a decision in the morning that may seem reasonable is 100% wrong by the afternoon.

Leave the poor beggars home where they can stretch out in a cool room.

I purposely left my spare bedroom with a tiled floor so the dogs have a nice cool surface to lie on if they get too warm and on hot days they have a cooling fan and access to a nice shaded garden with a couple of big trees in to stretch out under.

When I lived in America I even had a moulded plastic paddling paddling pool half buried in the ground so my dogs there could lay in the shade and would often find them blisfully soaking in the pool with their chins on the side looking very happy.

good advice, glad you included the poor dogs that died within the force, personally wouldve thought that guy shouldve been done for man slaughter?arnt dogs classed as officers???

when ever i take my gsd for walks on the downs i always take a 2ltr bottle of water with me in a ruck sack with a fold up bowl,i always try my best to put my dog 1st in any situation like this, because at the end of the day she is part of my family.

but sad fact is genuine mistakes do happen.

My dogs always come first.

No matter how cold, wet and tired I may be after a duty they always get dried, fed and watered before me.

I don't get my cup of tea and biscuit until the team is settled and happy. :d

Haha I spent 12 hours during the day standing in a security hut with all windows open to get maximum air flow my only form of air conditioning doing that to having to go out and deal with 200+ deliveries a day and having to wear a suffocating long sleeve shirt didn't help

If I seen a dog in a car and it look like it might slightly suffering that window is going to get broken I ain't going to wait an hour for the gardai (police) to show up don't care if I get done for criminal damage all I'd care about is saving that dogs life

I have to wear a stab vest with all the attachments plus the whole uniform is black so no fun in summer.

Just spent 3 days in London doing support duties with the Met due to 7/7 anniversary.

Warmer than Devon but far less humid so it was not bad at all.

2 duties around Canary Wharf and the O2 Arena so interesting work plus I got a free entry to the Mrs Browns Boys show last night too.

All in all a fun time :)

Sounds like a good result to me!

Not in the least.

It was a very kind gesture by the venue for hard work and dedication. :d

thats nice of them to appreciate your efforts but i thought you're not allowed to take bribes :o being a civil servant and all that!

we werent allowed to take any gratuitous goodies (pen, notebook, stress ball and sweets) from the hotel we used to book our meetings

i cant stand mrs browns boys personally, just doesnt do it for me. bring back goodness gracious me!!!

I think as it's more an invitation to join something already happening (and usually fileming audiences are free) there is no exchange of goods or money, as such it wouldn't be considered anything in par with bribes lol

It was just a nice gesture and greatly appreciated.

BTW I'm a Public Servant not a Civil Servant.

Jeez. You'd think with all the crap you have to deal with (I assume you are Police) - a little bit of a thank you would be acceptable, not classed as a "bribe".

I work for a big Accountancy firm and see lots of unofficial 'gifts' being handed out and received. If anyone deserves a thank you, it's our uniformed forces!

Back on topic - I own two dogs who rarely get left at home, but I will NEVER leave them in a car when it's even slightly warm. Even with open windows - there is still sun shining on them. I either take them with me or leave them at home where they have space, water and ventilation. B)

It sort of borrowed from various TV episodes to flesh out the story but was fresh and very funny indeed.

Ah can't beat Mrs browns boys and a well deserved treat for ya too.

Wish my company would turn around and say good job and hand me a cinema or concert or even a museum ticket nope they are just more interested in back stabbing to climb the totem pole.....

Starting to wonder should I stab someone in the back might get s promotion haha
