Question For Unleaded Owners

Featured Replies

So it says on the inside of the petrol cap "Use Premium Fuels! or something like that. Typically I haven't been, but I might start doing it now. Is there much of a difference in terms of how your car likes them as opposed to standard?

No.

ok thanks ha

Slightly better MPG which can, best case scenario, make it almost as cost effective as regular fuel. For the most part though it's more expensive. Definitely makes the car sound louder though, so there's that :)

My car is better on mpg with the premium fuel and it looks after the engine better

Think I'm gonna switch to it seeing as the lid says. I almost exclusively fill up at Asda in my city, which doesn't have it. (U know the whole drive through paying thing). I know you can pay at pumps too in Tesco, but yeah. I used to be one of those people who hated filling up and would do the Petrol Bingo thing that Clarkson mentioned in top gear

I used to put the tesco premium in but switched now, the difference that my mechanic says in the spark plugs with the two different fuels is unreal

What do you use now?

Shell v power plus or whatever it's called

Shell v power plus or whatever it's called

Cool, I'll try that now, thanks

Tried premium fuels for two months just burned a hole in pocket and got 3mpg better for me am stick to Cheap fuel as not worth it

(i do a lot of town/city and country driving on millions of hills) but that's just me

Strange how it sounds like some people don't like it, I haven't found it that much more expensive and I've had a lot more miles out of mine

There are many similar threads, have a search. In summary, if your car is calibrated for higher octane fuel, then yes, it will make a significant difference. If not, the differences are marginal (at best).

Anyway, yeah I've made a thread here before about how my car felt a bit sluggish, and then when I put it on a Dyno it still churned out 132bhp. . . So there's obviously nothing wrong with it. But now I've started using not Asda fuel it seems fine again. LOL. No one use Asda fuel haha

Results for anyone interested

For the record, I don't think it's a case of Premium fuel making the car perform better, but just certain types of regular unleaded making it perform worse. If that makes any sense?

From what I've heard it seems to be the supermarket fuel that isn't great. I'll still stick to v power nitro plus

I've always used Tesco basic fuel and car loves it

Haha, It's only Asda I seem to have an issue with. They have one type of unleaded and Diesel. I'm using whatever that super unleaded option is in Tesco atm, and the car likes it it too.

There's no such thing as '' supermarket fuel '' it's just fuel retailed by supermarkets & comes from the same few refineries & storage depots as all other fuel in the U.K.

Of course premium fuel such as V power & B.P. ultimate have additives that '' basic '' fuel does not - hence the premium cost.

Well yeah, that makes sense, ofcourse that would be the case, but for some reason, the fuel at the Asda in my city is somehow, not that great. Weather they do something to it after taking delivery, how it's stored, maybe it's diluted so they can sell more of it (like McDonald's soft drinks) I'm not sure, but I can absolutely promise you, when I use their fuel, the throttle response/smoothness in my car goes down.

When ma dad used esso's fuel for first time in a mk7 his engine cut out and wouldn't start had to get it flushed at garage and said they are diluting there fuel or doing something too it and it messed with the car and said our car wasn't the first time the garage has had that happen

(was a mk7 1.25 engine)

as long as it's octane 95 (according to my cars manual) - i believe all petrol stations have minimum 95 octane fuel. i haven't tried higher octane fuel, but as i've said before, as soon as shell start selling lego sets again, i'll be all over it

Was looking at other forums about it and someone on one posted this. If what he says is true, that could help to explain some things?

Based on a 3mpg boost on today's prices if you're getting 40mpg or more on standard fuels then it's cheaper to stick with them. If you're below 40mpg on standard fuels then it's cheaper to switch to premium.

I typically get 35-40mpg on standard unleaded so a 3mpg boost would be worth it for me.

To work out the cost per mile in pence

c = 3.785 x p ÷ mpg

where c = cost per mile, p = cost per litre in pence. Note that reasonable figures should be somewhere between 7p per mile (around 60mpg) and 22p per mile (around 20mpg).

Another way of looking at this... According to www.petrolprices.com today's average prices for regular unleaded are 117.10p and premium 126.00p. Thus premium is currently 7.6% more expensive. So roughly speaking if your fuel consumption increases by more than this then it's cheaper to use premium fuel. (As fuel prices fluctuate the 7.6% quoted will change).

On tescos fuel am getting 44mpg aslong as a don't blotto it

I've noticed the same too. . . I think it lasts longer (Momentum) along as you're keeping your revs low. I suppose the easiest way to explain the difference in fuels (between momentum and the asda at my location) is if you're doing 70 on the motorway and you hit an incline, with the Asda fuel I have to put my foot down just to maintain the same speed. I suppose the easiest thing to relate it to for an example is top end torque or something, I know the car's probably still got the same amount, but for me the Asda unleaded sort of feels like if you're mountain bike brake rotor is rubbing against the pad, not enough to slow you down properly, but enough so you can constantly feel it.
