Featured Replies

Hello guys/gals,

I been reading here for over 2 hours now great info. I don't understand all this DPF thing its the first time i am getting a focus and i do live it.

But i am confused if i have a DPF or not. I used the links people posted here and here what it gave me using https://www.etis.ford.com/

Can someone interpret if i have a DPF or not? (as you can see i have a 1.8TDCI)

Primary Features Build Date: 26.10.2007 Vehicle Line: Focus 04-08/Focus C-MAX 03-07 Body Style: 4 Door Estate Version: Series 15 Engine: 1.8L Duratorq-DI HPCR (115PS) Lynx Transmission: 5-Speed Manual Trans - MTX75 Drive: RHD FWD Emission: Stage IV Emissions Air Conditioning: Manual Air Conditioning Territory: (+)"GB" Paint: Ocean Blue (Metallic) Interior Fabric: Rack / Dark Flint (B-C)

Any help appreciated i love this forum thanks great info :D looking forward to many tips and advice (hopefully i can contribute)

thanks

FFS typing on the phone i can't even spell FOCUS!!!!

loolllll

Your car is Stage IV Emissions, Roman numerals for stage 4. So being a Stage 4 emissions vehicle and the 1.8TDCI engine I would say you don't have a DPF, certainly some stage 4 1.6TDCI engines have a DPF and anything later than Stage 5 should have a DPF.

So simply I don't believe the 1.8 has ever had a DPF fitted as it was a much older design engine. I could be wrong of course and someone shouls be along to confirm for sure.

WHy is the 1.8TDCI so special? and not have a DPF. I must say i really dreading purchasing the car if i find it has a DPF :-(

I was enjoying speeding around to the shops which are literally 4 mins away.

Fixed :)

The official introduction of DPF's in the UK was in 2009 on the Euro 5 emission vehicles - however a limited amount of vehicles had them prior to 2008 with Euro 3 & 4 emissions

Thanks mondeo I been havw been worried all night reading about dpf issues. Is there a simple check in can do to see if I have a dpf?

There's a lot of negative hype regarding DPF's, driven correctly any car with a DPF is not a lemon & will function perfectly well

The main issue is too many short journeys, which prevents the engine from reaching optimum operating temperature, the second issue is the EGRV which should be blanked

I'll have a look & see what I can find based on the info you have posted

You don't have a DPF on a 1.8TDCi. The 1.8TDCi is an old engine, it was never going to meet emmisions standards for Euro 5 so they just stopped using the engine when the new regulations came in rather than trying to get the emissions down.

Due to the 1.6TDCi being designed/created much later, it was designed with the new regs in mind so the 110bhp verisons were all fitted a DPF, even back to 2005 or whenever they first came out.

The spec for that car on carfolio.com states that your car has a CAT & not a DPF

Not sure that's correct Tom ?

2007 spec Focus 1.6tdci is listed as having a CAT ?

If its a 90bhp model it will only have a cat.

If it's a 110bhp model it will have a cat and DPF.

:)

DPF & CAT ? ?

Not as far back as 2005 though ?

Anything with a DPF has a cat included, most if not all are combined in the same can though, cat comes first to reduce CO, DPF comes after to remove particulates.

And yes back to 2005 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Ford-Focus-1-6-TDCi-DPF-Sport-5dr-/271938920495?hash=item3f50d2a02f

DPFs and PSA engines are something I have a lot of experience in lol.

Thanks Tom - very enlightening

My mum's old 1.6 110 hdi 206 (same engine) had a DPF.

That was built in 2005, was one of the first cars with that engine fitted and was a former Peugeot UK HQ car.

At the time we had to do a lot of hunting around to find one with that engine for her as they were nearly all 2.0 NA or 1.4 diesels.

Is this because the engines are French & because of the fact that DPF's were legally required to meet emissions reg's & fitted earlier in Europe than the U.K.?

The DV6 was designed to be launched in Euro 4 (the regs cover the whole of the EU at the same time), it needed to meet the particulate matter limits for new cars, which the 110bhp models didn't without a DPF. Other engines are the same, for example the 2.0 PD in VW/Audi cars also needed a DPF in 2005. The 1.8 TDCi gets away without because of it's older design, the 90bhp DV6 models get away without due to lower particulate levels as standard.

There is no legal requirement for a DPF to be fitted to new cars even now (heading for Euro 6) but it's basically impossible for any diesel to meet the particulate requirements without one now due to the way diesel burns.

So even if my car was registered 11/2007 it has a old engine design so it cannot possibly have a DPF? is that correct based on the info above?

I learn so much on here with my first ford. But the stories on DPF/DMF/Turbo/EGRV kind of made me think how do i actually test all this when i was purchasing the car from a private owner

That is correct, still beware of too many short journeys though & get the EGRV blanked asap :)

The 1.8 TDCi engine in the Focus never had a DPF, so you don't need to worry about that Mike. :)

You do however have a turbo, EGR valve and DMF. The turbo's seem to be pretty solid on the 1.8 so I wouldn't worry about that. The EGR valve is probably best blanked off as Mark suggests. That only leaves the DMF which can be a common issue on these. You'd know if it was faulty though, it'd make a heavy rattling/knocking at idle and startup/shutoff which changes with the clutch pressed. Don't get paranoid about it though, as I say you'll know if it's broken!

Yeah the DMF failed on the journey home from picking it up on my 1.8 TDCi Focus, fortunately the dealer agreed to pay for fixing it.

Didn't have much choice, lol.

DMF is the only worry on these engines, no turbo issues. get the EGR blanked off first thing

How much does it cost for blanking egr? Does that affect mpg and car drives?

A blanking plate is around £5 off e-bay, it's probably the cheapest mod you can do & cures / prevents all kinds of nasty things happening to your turbo / inlet manifold
