Focus Tdci Starting Problems

Featured Replies

I have an 02 TDCI which I've owned for 9 months, since we bought it the cold starting has been a minor problem but in the last two weeks it's progressively got worse. I read on here that it is most likely to be the crank angle sensor,I replaced this yesterday with no improvement,I've just put the original one back in and there is signs of rubbing on the new one I fitted only yesterday. I was due to see a friend today to stick it on his diagnostic equipment but the car coughs once and refuses to start altogether now, has anyone any ideas? I know it's crystal ball stuff but some pointers would be helpful, if I can get it running then I can drive it to for diagnosis. Also has anyone come across these sensors rubbing on the flywheel? I paid £23 plus postage for this one. The other question is- Do these things have a dual mass flywheel on them? Thanks.

Try replacing the fuel filter if it hasnt been replaced before. did the car run fine once it was started?

Yes your car has a Dual mass flywheel, however its not as expensive as the MK2 and others

A DMF failure is a possibility,my car had these symptoms before a replacement was needed.

I've done the fuel filter and the crank angle sensor so far,the new sensor looks like it's been touching the flywheel. I'm just about to take the starter motor out to see if there is a problem with that as it's been getting a lot of stick over the last couple of weeks due to the starting problems.

Is there adjustment on the crank sensor on these? If so, push it in until it touches the flywheel and pull it back slightly. The air gap is crucial.

i have an 09 1.6 diesel and same problems ive gotten injectors done, egr valve replaced and fuel filter done.. Could mine also be DMF?

Look for metal filings at the starter motor,a sign the flywheel is on it's out, eventually killing the starter.

Hi

I'm looking for some help with my 2006 ford focus 1.8 diesel.

The car will not start without using easy-start, it tries to start (turning over) but nothing. We have replaced both cam and crank sensors, a new fuel filter (ford genuine part) and bled it using a hand vacuum pump (no air bubbles), new air filter and glow plugs.

We have used a hand held diagnostic device and said it was fault code p0089 fuel pressure regulator fault. We checked the sensor it self and seems to be fine when you disconnect it while running it seems to run on 3 cylinders (limp home mode).

When checking the injectors it seems fine the pressure is great and plenty of fuel coming out same on the pump as well. I know the fuel pump are bad on the model but seems to be working great.

We have checked the EGR and was dirty so we have cleaned it but didn't make any difference.

The engine fault light comes on and every time we clear it, it still wont start and comes back. There was little flakes of metal in the old filter( but very, very little) so I know we will need to clean the fuel lines out and tank but don't think this would stop it from starting normally.

I have been told to replace the pump and if that doesn't work then replace the ECU but very expensive and don't want to do this if the problem is still there.

Any advice would be great as i have ran out of ideas. thanks

Thanks for the advice guys, I think i have solved the problem with the addition of......................................... (wait for it) .............................................a new starter motor. I'ts the most bizarre solution I could think of, the car had just had a new starter fitted when we bought it(allegedly though i do have the receipt and it looked new), it's always sounded to turn over ft enough and never missed engaging, it then started to not engage because of the difficulty in getting the engine started-or so I thought-, in the end I've bought and fitted a new starter motor and it fired straight away and there has been no problem with it starting since. The starter cranking speed doesn't sound any faster than the old one but it seems to have cured the problem. A strange one.

I have a 2011 1.6 diesel Focus with keyless start. It is the the first Diesel that I have ever owned. I got it in July. Recently I have noticed that on pressing the start button there is often a couple of seconds before the engine turns over. Is this due to the wearther getting colder and the 'glo plug' doing it's thing or something more serious. It has only just started doing it and it does not appear to do it when the engine is warmed up.

Yes Jim, as you guessed, it's just pausing while the glo plugs warm up. Mine does it too when cold, warm starts are instant.

Hey newbie did you sort it? I was told 1.8 tdci does not do fuel pumps only 1.6 and 2.0. Drop the fusebox down in passenger foot well and mess with the wires and try to start it.

Thanks, thats what I thought.

My 1.8 will cut out when you cold start it and touch the accelerator but once you restart it it's fine after that. Done it ever since my dad bought it 4 years ago and we could never figure it out. Since I've blanked the egr it doesn't do it all the time maybe half the time, is there a fix for this? It's not too much of a problem just I'd sooner fix it if poss
