Help - Scratch Removal!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Was at Tesco's this morning, and slightly misjudged the length of the Focus bonnet (quite long for a hatchback tbh) - ended up touching the bumper against a brick wall, leaving the scratches in the picture below. I now feel like punching myself, hard.

I know places like Halfords sell 3 piece paint repair kits for approx 15 quid, but these seem to take a long time to apply (waiting 24 hours in between layers) - and I don't even have a garage, so don't exactly fancy doing any long DIY jobs on the side of the road.

Apparently Ford sell a 'pen' that can be used to touch up small scratches. If it's quick to fix, and suitable for the damage I have, I might get one. Any other ideas on the most convenient way of repairing the damage??

Thanks.

Whatever you do the damage will always be noticeable as you've compromised the paint system.

The only way youd completely hide the damage would be to strip, smooth & respray the area.

The touch up pens from Ford take about an hour to dry. Can't comment on the halfords kit

Thanks for the reply mate. As long as it's not noticeable from far away, that's all that really matters. Close-up - I don't mind so much.

Do you know how much the touch up pen is roughly? And how easy it is to apply? A guy local to me (mobile van repair) offered to do a touch-up for 30 quid. If the pen is going to be good enough, I might go this route, otherwise I'll call back the guy, and get it fixed.

The kits are around £17. Make sure you get the right colour code, not just the name as colours vary yearly.

If the mobile van repair is a "smart repair" I'd walk away. Their repairs last about 3 years then deteriorate due to the "smart" paints used

Alright, thanks!

Apologies for butting in Steve with a question about these touch up pens.

Are these just a small amount of paint with the wee touch up brush. Not that I use this stuff I am about to mention :D But the same idea as the brush a woman might use for nail varnish ?

Or is it the same idea as those magic pens you used to see on they shopping channels or from jml or whatever it is called.

I got the wee touch up stick(applied with a small brush) out of a paint store to touch up the scratch on the door of my ST. But wasn't sure on whether to use it or not in case it turned out a disaster.

Again sorry Steve for jumping in on your post mate.

No worries mate, your post is extremely relevant anyway, please do feel free to even steal the thread if you want!

Its paint and a brush mate just like your nail varnish! The trick is to not lay it on too thick although when its in the middle of a shiny door panel it will only be marginally less visible than the chip/scratch.

Cocktail sticks and cotton buds cut in half for the small stone chips :)

+ 1 on the cocktail stick method

Yip a guy on the bmw forum used a cocktail stick on his old 7 series and he made some job of it.

Might give it a go. just a bit weary in case I make a mess of it. one of the scratches is right on the end of the drivers door, so might try a wee bit on there. Car is performance blue so Im not sure how it will turn out.

Blues are pretty 'easy'.. it's blacks, whites and reds that are a pain
