alternator wiring - help required

hi there. I have a mk4 fiesta, 1.3 endura engined beastie that ive recently had to do some work on. The problem is - after putting it all back together, i couldnt remember wether the alternator main wire ran to the starter motor ( the top connection of the solenoid), or direct to the battery terminal? Can anyone help? The haynes manual shows the wire running to both(!), so that wasnt much help.

on a side note, i had one side the car jacked up the other day and started the engine, and i noticed the wheel of the side that was off the ground was spinning slowly, even though it was in nuetral. has anyone come across this before?
