Do I Go For This Job?

Featured Replies

I'll be honest, I haven't even discussed this with my husband yet...

A position in my company has become available, same night shifts as before but full time guaranteed hours rather than part time with possible over time shifts when they're there. Problem is its 45 miles away meaning a 90 mile a day round trip over 6 days, the pay means this is possible but would you do it?

It's the old question of money versus free time

If you really need the extra £ - then maybe it's a good idea but if you value your free time more than £ - then maybe not

Add in extra fuel & wear & tear on your car to the equation

Work out how much you're earning now and compare to how much you will get then take into account extra fuel and general wear and tear eg tyres

I work night shifts and I wont work full time until Christmas time as I value free time and when working full time I don't get to do the things I love like mountain biking and going out with friends.

I personally would not do it as free time has always been more important than money to me

Each to their own though

If you enjoy the job (I use that word loosely!) and could cope with the hours and traveling - go for it.

I know that isn't much help but there really isn't anything we can suggest. It is your life, but personally yes I would go for it.

The wife also does a longish commute which she does not mind untill the winter arrives and then it can become a nightmare, just another thing for you to consider.

Long travel time is not too bad in the nice summer nights, but its the dreary winter nights that makes it more miserable. Then when your at work and the snow comes you start thinking will I actually make it home tonight. Its little thoughts like that that can put a downer on the travel time to and from work.

I drive for a living. Always have been a driver, vans or lorries. but in the miserable winter day/nights its a pain.

I find I would rather have a lower income and have my spare time rather than more wages and longer time out the house.

You have to consider the travel time each day. Is it going to add an extra hour to work then the same back home again, which is obviously 2 hours per day, 10 hours over the week, 40 hours over the month and so on. which more or less adds another average weekly hours to your monthly time just in travel time. So it would have to be a big rise in the wages for me to even consider it.

That's not taking into consideration of traffic hold ups every other day too.

Its too far IMO, i wouldnt want my wife doing all that travelling. If you can manage financially then i would hold out for something closer to home.:)

I'm working two jobs currently and with my working hours and the hours my partner works we only get two or three evenings and a saturday morning together, factor in a one year old and its pretty difficult and is putting strain on our realationship.

I would personally give anything for more time at home,

Just make sure you factor family life in

I was more or less the same as what Warren has said at one point.

My wife was dayshift, she got home about 5pm. I was doing a backshift Trunk down south and left the house about 5:30pm.

So we never got to spend time together through the week. Got to the stage even at weekends time was limited to time alone as we got together with friends etc.

I would never go back to that if I could help it.
