Diy Service Help - Newbie!

Featured Replies

Planning to DIY service my Fiesta MK7 to save some money this year but looking for some pointers.

Before I go on it is a 1.4 TDCi Zetec, 60 plate.

My main queries at present are:

Brands - filters etc, any particular brands to avoid/look at, does it make much difference?Fluid volumes - not sure what volumes of oil, coolant etc I will need to properly fill everything, finding conflicting values from different sources.Tools - Will I require an specialist tools to remove/replace anything I will be changing?

Planning to go to EuroCar parts for the parts at the moment but open to suggestion as fairly new to this.

Thanks in advance.

Haynes Manual is a good start!!

Everything else is doable with a fairly basic set of spanners and sockets :-)

Personally, I like Mann filters - on my Focus, the Mann filter fits better than the Ford Original part!!

I also recommend using a set of ramps (small metal ones). Safer, quicker and easier than fannying about with jacks and axle stands!!

I'm assuming that you're doing basic filters and oil change?

ECP is a handy one-stop-shop.

Yeah already have the Haynes book.

Yeah nothing too hefty, just filters and fluids. Oil, pollen, air, fuel. Will check the coolant level is ok as well probably, depends when it was last changed, will check my paper work later.

Plus will look at the brakes check the lines for any obvious leaks as per the Haynes if I can.

Just reluctant to dive straight in having not done anything much before.

Mann & Crosland have been making OEM filters for donkeys years & very good they are too

Just as Bosch make Ford spark plugs & plenty of other parts found in a Ford

B.P. / Castrol make Ford oil

Ford make very little themselves apart from the car body

Fordpartsuk do service kits with genuine ford parts, just need oil.

National tyres do oil changes quite cheap £40 for yours including oil and filter, to me that's a bargain, don't have to but tools, get dirty or dispose of the oil yourself.

Only downside there is I'd be paying 60 odd quid for the kit which has a filter, then £40 for oil and filter change at National Tyres.

Exactly.. £100+ for something you could do yourself for less than £50

Depends what filiters etc I go for, still looking at fuel filters but they will be around £50 plus some oil so still far less than the ford official kit, whcih I doubt my local garage that I used in the past would use anyway.

Have a look on eurocarparts and use the Forum discount code. I got filters and oil for quite a bit less than £50

Where is the code you speak of, ECP is where I have been looking at filters.

Just stuck on fuel filters, I have the option of VM or Crosland

It's a code for FOC supporters only, I didn't realise you're not a member. Try TEST5 , it's the sites test code

Anyone suggest using ebay over ECP?

For example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291125021790

Have you ever done this sort of thing before? Have you got tools, axle stands jack etc? How much would a local garage cost to do the same work? Sometimes trying to save money by DIY in the end doesn't.

Not on this particular car no.

Not sure on what brands of parts to obtain relevant to the vehicle, trying to get some advice as such.

As for the correct tools yes I have access to what I need.
