Communication Skills (Getting Old?)

Featured Replies

OK, so I'm in my late 50's and when I was a kid I used to get fed up when old folk used to complain about the way youngsters did things. I vowed to try and avoid falling into the same trap when I was their age. So it is with some hesitation that I'm actually posting this.

There are people who believe our langauge is constantly evolving and some who believe it should be set in stone. My position is somewhere in the middle. We went through a period where people wrote in txt format because that's what they did on their (pre-smartphone) mobile phone. It was understandably quicker to do that with the slow input speed of those keyboards. Things are not so bad today with the superior keyboards and predictive text our smartphones have.

Should we still be writing in perfect English with perfect grammar and correct punctuation? I'm not suggesting we should jump on every mis-spelling or apostrophe that's in the wrong place.... that really would be anal but I've just read a technical post in one of the car specific forums where I genuinely have not been able to understand what the poster was saying because of poor punctuation and spelling. This can't be good for the poster with the problem because people who might be able to help him, hold back because they don't understand what he's saying.

Please excuse me while I put my flak jacket on and open another pack of Wurthers Originals. ;)

I recently had to decipher hieroglyphics to understand a F.O.C. posters' request :)

just be glad emoji's arent on here yet!

Text speak is fine in the right situation. However I find it easier to type properly with predictive text anyway not to mention on screen keyboards.

However on forums like this there are usually two rules that should be followed.

1 English language only unless there are specific forums for other languages and also written as legibly as possible.

As you say odd spelling mistake or grammar etc is just being human and should not be criticised. But when youngsters type a post with no punctuation that barely makes any sense is likely to be ignored by anyone who can't decipher it.

Just my opinion but it's the way it is nowadays.

And not all in CAPITAL LETTERS.

I still consider that to be digital shouting.

PARDON?

I'm all for typing properly and I would saw grammar as well, but sometimes I get mixed up(see for example I just put a , then said but, however you're not supposed to put a comma before but & and. Although there is no excuse nowadays like the original poster said, for not using proper language, with the exception of LOL. I use lol a lot. My generation really irritate me, with their horrific fashion sense and text talk. What's wrong with putting proper words like mate instead of m8. And what's wrong with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt

you 'saw' away.

you 'saw' away.

Lol that's a typo for you, just testing you all........... :whistling:

Predictive text is good but does frustrate me when it puts unexpected words in for me

I used to hate it but got used to it, now it's brilliant. I think it depends on the phone as to how good the predictive text is. My s6 will not use swear words at all, despite them being added to my dictionary

I often find myself re-reading what I've just typed especially if predictive text is involved. Typing on a phone I often get half of my sentences converted into gibberish. But on forums I try to use proper grammar, like an email but a bit less formal.

Never was any good at grammar despite going to a grammar school
