Different Engine......

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I have recently found out that my 53 plate focus has at some point had a "new" engine fitted, obviously this is not a new new one just new to the car. When this was fitted would it have been calibrated with my mileage clock?

How would I know how many miles my engine has actually done or does that not matter and it's the mileage of the car that is important?

Also, I am unsure where to find a serial/registration number of the engine so that I can check exactly what it is.

Any advise welcome.

The mileage that the new ' new ', or replacement, engine has covered is indeed important - it could be a low mileage one, in which case it's probably good for many thousands more miles OR it could be an old dog that's on it's last legs !

The total recorded mileage of the car should be unaltered, as far as the mileometer is concerned, but it would be good provenance to know at what mileage the car was fitted with a replacement engine.

Did you buy the car private or trade ?

I got it from a private seller but somebody who was recommended to me from our local branch of well known garage lol.

The guy was one of their mechanics at the time, key in the sentence there "WAS" grrrrr he left not long after I bought this.

I could go to my local dealership tomorrow and get myself something else but I like this little car and want to persevere with it.

The mileage is reading at 104k and the car is supposed to be a 1.8 but who knows now lol

104k for a 2002 car is lower than average mileage :)

I'd pop the car back to your friendly garage & ask them to identify the engine for you & they will know where the engine number is too

As for determining the mileage already covered by the replacement engine, that could be tricky without paperwork or access to the ex-owner :(

Furthermore Lynsey, if the replacement engine was documented as being installed, the engine number will be on the V5C

I'm not sure how far back Etis goes, but the original VIN is based on the engine number, so if you get the new engine number and work out the VIN, you may be able to look it up on ETIS and find the reg.

You can then use the new MOT history check to see what sort of mileage the donor car was on when it had its last MOT.

My log book matches my car which is good start because we were worried about that too, plus my log book does state it is supposed to be a 1.8.

Now we have searched and searched for a number on this replacement engine and for the life of us we can't find it.

I'm not too sure how professional this engine change was carried out, I have my suspicions that it was some amateur mechanic previous owner that has done it. The AC intake mount is still attached to the mainframe but not connected to the engine anywhere and the AC unit on this engine has blown anyway but is in a different position, which gives us our clues that it is not the original one.

The main area of your concern should be : is the current engine number correct on the V5C ? - if it is not, then you may face issues when you come to sell the car

As far as i know there is no mention of engine number on the V5? I've never noticed or declared any.

The engine number is on the V5 / V5C

correct, the v5 has a section for engine number if known, otherwise the last 7 digits of chassis number (year, month, vehicle number) is inserted which bears no resemblance to the engine fitted, ive not seen actual engine numbers on engine blocks for a number of years

Me neither. The last VW engine and Mazda engine I done I had to give up looking for it, engine code but nothing else.

Last time I looked section P5 lists the engine number on a V5 / V5C

Does your V5 have the engine number of your Mondeo listed? Mine has 'Not known'.

Yes, Stef it certainly does, as does the Focus's V5C

It consists of 2 letters & 5 numbers & is also the last 7 digits of the V.I.N. listed directly above section P5 on the V5C

Section 7 ( Changes to current vehicle ), of the V5C, provides for an update to the D.V.L.A. regarding the engine number, but I'm unsure if that's a legal requirement anymore as they are more interested in engine size changes & V.E.D. changes for taxation purposes

but its not actually an engine number any more

It may or may not be - but the DVLA call it, & list it as an engine number, & that's good enough for me :)

Hi Guys, right my V5C does indeed state an engine number and it is the last 7 digits of the VIN number but the format of mine is - number, letter then 5 numbers.

So is it not likely that I will find out where this current engine originated from, I think a previous owner has had this car as a restoration project.

One more thing if I may ask, I have a flapping and knocking sound coming from under the front end that maximises at about 20 mph and is worse while turning left but then disappears when I break. The car has recently had a new drop link on the anti roll bar and replacement bushes on some wishbone things lol sorry I can't be more technical. The garage can't see anything obvious but suspect my drive shaft has started to fail, is this plausible????

Not too sure anybody caught my question at the end of my last post :)

I don't have an answer to this one - maybe post as a new topic ibn the relevant forum ?
