Advice On Broken Car.

Featured Replies

Hi just after a bit of advice, I have a 53 plate focus 1.8 tdci, it needs a new cylinder head which will end up costing more than the car is worth.

So my question is what can I do with it?

I can't afford to buy another car or get this repaired,

Would I be best just scrapping it or trying to sell for spares?

Also could I claim on insurance for things like this?

Any advice would be very much appreciated thank you.

You can't claim on insurance for wear and tear.

The car will be worth most broken down and sold as parts.

or put a scrapyard engine in it

Like Dezwez says, price up a scrapyard engine and get a price for a backyard chimp to chuck it in, that would be cheapest if you need the car. You will get next to f.a scrapping it, and as there are still loads left I doubt it will break for a nice stack of cash, you'll be left with pieces of car which will sell for peanuts.

Look around gumtree etc, there are scrapyard dodgers on there, you might be able to pick up a shafted car for cheap and have the engine out

Thanks for the advice, will look into scrapyard engine, but I imagine it's not cheap my budget is very tight atm.

I was thinking of selling parts of it goodkat, because other than the engine problem the car itself is in mint condition, but I don't really have the space to be storing a car with bits missing, and you say when all the good stuff is gone I'm left with a pile of scrap.

Got quoted £20 for scrapping it, 1 wheel is probably worth more 😀

what about saleing it as spares or repair

I think that may be my best bet for getting a bit of money and fairly quick richard.

How much money do you have? I have never paid more than £300 for a car with at least a few months MOT.

Don't really have a budget tbh. It's too close to Christmas and I have children so they have to come first.

Do you need the car for work or to transport them? If so keeping the car on the road would be pretty high in my list of priorities.

If you don't go down the repair route you could pick up something like this...

Not a Ford but if you can scrape a few hundred together it would do until the MOT expires.

Thanks jmurray,

I am actually very interested in that car. (I have a thing for estates)

Will see about that one tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Glad I could be of assistance! Although, I fear I may have a burning cross on my front lawn when the others discover I may have swayed somebody from keeping a Ford

I have just got £100 from selling the car as it is.

So that will do nicely towards a cheap runaround.

I will only need it for a couple of months anyway as I can spend alot more in the new year.

Thanks guys for your input, it's very much appreciated 😀

Wow that was quick! Good going, best of luck with the next car.
