Why Have I Got Two Radiators

Featured Replies

I have just done my monthly check of fluid levels and tyre pressures, beyond that my mechanical knowledge is limited. However looking around the engine compartment I noticed that there appear to be two radiators each with its own fan. I guess the larger one is the radiator for cooling the engine but what is the other for?

Is it the intercooler

Aircon radiator

Air con condensor possibly?

I have looked under the bonnet again this morning and noticed that the fan on the larger radiator comes on when the AC is turned on, so that must be the AC condenser. The smaller radiator also has a fan but I haven't noticed that come on, this might be the intercooler. I think the main radiator is in front of these two smaller rads, it is all so enclosed it is difficult to see and follow any pipework.

Ford made a big thing of the 3 cylinder engine being no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper but of course they were referring to the cylinder block, with all the ancillaries added virtually all the space under the bonnet has been used.

Biggest one with a fan will be the radiator, the intercooler is nearer the driver's side headlight and arranged vertically, both can be seen through the front grill, the aircon rad is behind the radiator and is thinner.

I'm thrown by the fact each has a fan?

Yeah each has a fan. MarksST has described it perfectly so I am sure he is correct.

My intercooler on the focus ecoboost 1.0 has fan.
