Problem With Fiesta (Not Picking Up Speed)

Featured Replies

Introduction

So basically I've recently bought a Ford Fiesta and I've had a few problems with it. I'm not sure what this problem is but it defiantly, cannot be good.

When the vehicle is started, it sounds fine. Only when I push the accelerator down and give the car some revs, releasing afterwards will make some sort of popping and grinding sound in my exhaust system.

Whilst driving, it has a really bad problem. I'll put it in first, and have to push my foot further down in order to find the bite. Once pulling off, I'll go into second at around 15MPH. If I put my foot down then, it will pull, but very slowly. It will take it around 4-5 seconds for the vehicle to reach five thousand revs. If I put it into third (at around 3000 revs whilst in second), the car dislikes it. It will act as if it's in a too low of a gear and jerk. I then have to slam my foot down on the accelerator and the car will remain going 30, counting up extremely slowly to 31... 32... 33.... When releasing the accelerator from around 3000 revs, it makes a popping sound from the exhaust system.

This problem only happens on occasions, sometimes it works fine, but most of the time the vehicle is seriously poor.

The engine management light is on, and flashes when I try accelerating by putting my foot down too. It's worse on hills, even just by going up them in second it flashes.

I know I should take it to a garage, but I'm just counting up to see how much around it will cost.

Vehicle information:

Make: Ford

Model: Fiesta Finesse

Year: 2003

Engine: 1.25

Mileage: 45,000

Modifications:

* Brake Pads

* Wheels (Obviously)

* Power Steering Sensor

* Windscreen Wipers

The car was brilliant once I had it. However the power-steering sensor went so I had to take it back to the garage and there it got fixed. It occurred around 2-3 months after obtaining the vehicle, this started to happen. I do put my foot down when I drive at times, but surely this shouldn't happen?

Anyone know anything about this problem?

Thanks

- Dan.

Have you checked for DTC's? If not, you can grab a obd2 reader with Bluetooth from Amazon for a few quid, connect your phone and see if there's anything there. I use "OBD Car Doctor" on my android phone.

When was the car last serviced ?

I was thinking of doing that, but I've literally blew all my money out on modifications this month.

The car was last serviced 2-3 months ago.

It has part-service history, and intervals of MOT's that the car has only been driven around 3-4k miles per year.

The popping you describe could well be the engine misfiring - take the spark plugs out & tell us what colour the tips are

Will try that tomorrow. Need the right tools so will pop out in the morning and get them.

Do you think spark plugs is what could be causing the issue?

Thanks

- Dan.

Maybe the plugs . . . or coil packs or H.T. leads

Start with the cheapest possible causes first - hence a look at the plugs

Yeah that would be easier.

I'll reply back with what colour they are anyhow :)

Thanks for the help.

The Coil pack is a common issue on the mk6. I mean, Very common.

Another issue is the lack of a seal around washer jets, allowing water into the engine bay. It's gradually works its way off the airbox and into the spark plug well, causing plenty of issues.

I had 3 snapped spark plugs which I spend countless hours extracting to save the head.. wasn't fun. They didn't look yo have been changed in years & they were properly torqued up -_-

Did yours have the same issue as mine?

I've been driving with it now for awhile :(

Thanks for the replies.

The coil pack & HT leads were changed by the AA before I bought it thankfully but there's plenty of people that have had the problem. I've still got the AA part that I scavenged after the accident.. it'll be going on the current car when this fails.

The car was still extremely weak and underpowered (occassional misfire) (I hadn't test driven as I was underage at the time of buying but the seller drove it with me in the car)

On finally removing the plugs they were a state.. New plugs and air filter made all the difference. no more misfire, better fuel consumption and felt more lively

Followed up by a full service it's been spot on since :)

To solve the water issue look at "mist type washer jets". They have a rubber seal

What colour are the spark plug tips ?
