Unusual Jobs?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking for some inspiration/advice about gaining an income, not so much a quick job or a long term career, but something to tide me over for an unknown amount of time but I'm lacking ideas tbh.

I've got some health problems that make a 9-5 impossible. Plus I can't travel far. I can't be 'trapped' anywhere such as behind a till. And I can't use telephones. There's more to it than that but there's the simple version that affects working lol.

Anyway, I am in the (extremely slow) process of trying to improve on some of those, but I need to find some sort of income in the meantime. It's looking like it'll have to be self employment...but doing what!?

I don't really have any skills that I can think of. I live in a small flat so don't have much space. I'd like to do something car related if possible. I do have some money set aside to put into a business but need to be fairly sure it'll work out rather than just risking it.

So yeah, not an easy one I know, but if anyone has any ideas, or even better does a job they think would suit, I'd be really interested to hear it! :)

Cheers

Tom

As daft as this might sound, start off as a car handyman.

Dont claim to repair cars if you dont feel you can do it, however, wash them, help do little jobs, maybe help with small repairs etc. Start off asking all your family and then they can spread the word.

If you are good with computers, you can do some work with them, repairs, maintenance, etc.

Alternatively, you could always be paid as the designated drunk :p (ask at your local pub :p)

on a serious note though, just be an odd jobs man, gardening, cleaning, car work, male companion - anything that takes your fancy that day!

I was going to suggest car valet. But if you can't use a phone, it's going to be difficult to do anything really.

Good luck anyway.

Someone I know on another forum, sells refurbished car parts via ebay, Amazon and his own web site, VW parts mainly exported to Australia - where apparently they can't get enough of them! He started off in a one bedroom flat with little storage space.

Dropshipping might work for you, you don't have to carry the stock, you merely collate the orders and send them on. Although, there's quite a few people doing that now. Again, you'll need an online presence (ebay, Amazon etc)

As you can't use a phone, that kind of knocks anything on the head, that is broker based.

As Jamie said odd job/handyman would work.

If you can put yourself out and about, locally, and introduce yourself to the car showrooms, independent dealers etc You may be able to overcome the lack of phone use to drum up business for a car valet. From there, you'll get recommended to others and thus grow your business.

There are such jobs freelance home based data clerks, but the two I know who do this, were formerly employed by the company they now sub-contract for.

Pimp, Male escort :P or drug dealer?? lol

Seriously though it depends on what you can and can't do, anyone can offer a service doing anything the hard bit is getting clients and making enough money to live from it.

Vehicle cleaning, Valeting, detailing, window cleaner/handyman etc etc.

I don't drink unfortunately so designated drunk is out lol.

Don't have much family, and my Mum has a brand new car every few years so doesn't need any car work. I do car work for a few local mates though and am always up for lending a hand with car related stuff but never seem to get other people asking, not sure why. That is the sort of thing I'd like to get into though!

Yep, you're right, I think most people take phones for granted, causes so much hassle not being able to use them. That is one thing I'm definitely trying to work on.

I'm often trying to sell car parts but with little luck lately tbh, not broken any Fords yet but have broken loads of Peugeots and a few others. Used to make decent money on them but the last one or two weren't worth it. I was wondering about breaking up cars properly, say have 3 or 4 breaking at once if I could rent a barn or something locally, but not sure of legal implications for that. I know depolluting cars requires a lot of legal stuff but I'm not sure if there's a way to break them then let a proper yard deal with whatevers left for scrap.

I did look into drop shipping but with stuff getting so cheap online now, it has to be done on large quantities to make a reasonable income unfortunately.

Tempted by drug dealing or pimping tbh, I already drive a black car with limo tints and multispokes so half way there. ;) Not sure male escort is my sort of thing but whatever floats your boat. :P

Getting clients is definitely the hard part, particularly without much family or many friends and definitely without phones. I have tried a few things previously, gardening, vinyl cutting, even a bit of antique dealing lol, but finding any custom let alone enough for a decent wage really isn't easy.

you sound as if your handy with your hands, how about making wooden toys etc.watch a few u tube vids for inspiration ideas

If you go to wash them.. polite request..

please do it properly.. No sponges.. No cheap shampoo.. No silicone.. two buckets etc etc :)

The chap I know who sells refurbished car parts, doesn't break the vehicles himself. Nowadays, he literally drives all over the country, but when he started he visited local breakers and removed what parts he knew would sell. Took them home, cleaned them up and sold them on.

He was very wary of getting stuck with partially broken vehicles, with no sellable parts on them. And the whole myriad of licenses you need to legally dismantle a vehicle.

Start selling on eBay

Would involve a little bit of wiring,

Small bit of drilling

But you would be selling bespoke ready made kits for people's cars.

When I was unemployed in 2012 i set up a business called FastFocus Custom Parts,

Bought items from China websites and sold on eBay aswell as making up some wired kits using my own car as a template then selling as kits.

Don't purchase anything until you get a buyer,

Then purchase parts make kit and cash in on the excess

Ready built dual reverse light kit,

Custom mud flap kit for ST RS and ZetecS models

front & rear footwell lighting with ignition ring

glovebox dual dash cam kit with glovebox insert

additional boot light kit

Cavity spaced carpeted boot amp panel with amp and wiring.

All plug & play

I don't do it now myself because I've three kids which value my time and option of overtime on a weekly basis,

Second reason is shipping costs; because I'm in Ireland shipping to and from the UK it's not that profitable for me to purchase and compile parts then ship out as one unit.

If I was a UK resident,

Id qualify for free shopping when purchasing parts such as cable etc.

Then my only shipping fee would be when selling as one unit.

Being a male escort is good money apparently. There are plenty of women allegedly that will pay for you to go out with them, for a meal or opera or musical or function or whatever. Just someone to talk to and have a night out no extra services required lol

At least that is what I have been told.

Lol, I've been using wash mitts, drying towels and decent cleaning products since before you were old enough to drive... :P

Ah I see. Problem there is there is only one local yard, so they can charge daft prices and also don't let you walk around. :( When I need a few bits I go down to Essex for the yard there, it's a bit of a trek though!

would be a nice part time job but I hope it's not like most work places where you have to start at the bottom

or

your own bottom...

According Louis Theroux's documentary, the bottom (no pun intended) has fallen out of the adult entertainment business, since the availability of free or pirated stuff via peer to peer. Performers are no longer making a fortune, apparently.

Male performers are also (no pun etc) at the bottom of the pay scale, unless they'll do everything - which many won't

and I suspect those who do,

Do it all, spend it all on drugs to block out the constant reality of it.
