Budget Tablets

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a good cheap tablet to get my parents for Christmas, just thought I'd see what everyone on here would go for. Had a quick look at reviews this evening and my favourite two so far are the Tesco hudl 2 (£99) and Nvidia Shield K1 (£150).

The Shield is probably what I'd get if it was for me, and although my parents won't be using any of the gaming features it looks like a solid Android tablet for the price. Does anyone know of any good alternatives? I could probably stretch to £200 if there is something really good at that price, but the hudl 2 at half that looks like a really good deal.

My dad had a hudl a couple of years ago, was very good for web surfing etc.

Only problem was that the charger port broke after a year rendering it useless, common issue apparently, don't know whether they fixed it for the hudl 2.

Apart from that it was a very good little tablet

^ At least it comes with a charger, the Shield doesn't lol. I think they realized everyone has about three micro-usb chargers lying around somewhere.

The Hudl2 is now discontinued, perhaps check out some of the Kindle fires, I have a Nexus 7 but again they don't make them anymore!

Depends on what they are using it for really. How old they are and what they are used too.

As an example if they are more used to Windows then look at windows tablets as they will be more familiar.

I paid £159.99 for my Linx 1010b 10" Windows 10 tablet from PC world, I have just also got my free Keyboard dock for mine.

Amazing tablet for the money in my opinion and I think its down £139.99 or was.

Same here, (but for my mum & auntie to share)

It's mainly for family photo's/video and some puzzles, I'll give them their first email address too lol.

They never use modern tech, so I'm going for the Android OS to keep things simple.

They need a 10" screen as they are getting on and need a bigger screen.

The one I found today which I like is the Asus ZenPad Z300C 10", £129 from PC World or Argos.

The resolution (1280x800) is lacking for me, but should be fine for them,

It has a MicroSD Card slot which is essential for all the family photos & video I need to put on it.

Yes that's true, but you can still buy it. Although the fact that it's discontinued does put me off a bit - it's good to know that a manufacturer is dedicated to the product after you buy it.

It will mainly just be used for browsing, but I'm sure there will be some apps I can find that will be useful for them. The Linx is the other one I heard good things about but forgot its name, so I'll have a look at that too.

Edit: I think the Linx is let down by its screen - only 720p when it should really be 1080p even at such a low price. Otherwise it's very cool to have what is a fully functional PC in tablet form for £130.

Lennovo Flex 10 at £160 is a fair buy, ridiculous battery life, kick stand built in, decent speakers.

if they use W10 then the linx, if they have android phones go that route, amazon fire cant go wrong for the price.

the hudl was discontinued due to them loosing money on each one hoping to recoup cost in blinkbox sales etc. if you look at the specs similar would be £300 not the £120 they sold for.

Looks ok but it's more a laptop than a tablet, and like the Linx I think it's let down by the screen.

They have a Win 8.1 laptop but my dad has an Android phone and had an Android tablet before, so either would be ok. It just looks like the Android tablets give you better specs for the price.

I personally have two Nexus 7 (Gen 1) - Got one free with my first phone contract (she ended up in the car as my infotainment system). The second one, could be bought for about £40. Even at £40, for a tablet that is now about 4 or 5 years old, its worth buying them. Everytime a new android comes out, it gets upgraded. Its sturdy, strong, taken a beating from the kids, it always gets up for more.

I went for the Shield in the end, it just looked like too good a deal for what it is at that price. I'll report back with my opinions on it after Christmas :)
