Strange Tapping From My Feet Area

Featured Replies

ok let me start i bought a fiesta st mk6 with 27k miles really clean car just needed a few little things doing is what i thought. so when i was driving it home i noticed a strange knocking or tapping feeling come from around my feet area so i took the car to my local garage and found out that it needed a new suspension top mount had that done noise still there, so then i had all four tyres changed so now imn 400 pound in and still the noise is there. so then i was reading around i heard it might be the shock making the noise had them changed and its still there, so at this point i'm starting to get obsessed with this noise/ tapping that is driving me mad, then i felt the clutch slip and i thought it must be the clutch making the noise had the whole clutch changed plus slave and master cylinder and its still there so then i changed the lower gear box mount and its still there so i spent a massive amount of money chasing this tapping noise/ feeling it happens when i'm driving straight or corners cold or hot in gear and out of gear but one thing i did notice i might be wrong but it feels worse when it's only me in the car so it might be weight related but i'm not sure i've had two garages look over the whole car too check too see if anything is loose or needs changing and they said its fine but there is definitely something not right. can anyone help that might have had the same sort of thing happen to their fiesta as im running out of cash fast thanks guys for reading

there is no taping feeling at slow speeds or if the car is not moving the engine sounds great

Drop links. I would have changed them first at £10 a side

i checked the drop links there fine is not that sort of noise it seems more of a stronger tap then that like something is knocking or rattling

So does it only do it when the car is moving? And it's the rate of the knock relative to the speed of the car? Or the speed of the engine rotation?

  • Author

yes its only when the car is moving but the rate of speed doesn't affect the rate of knocking its the same no matter what speed i do

could it be anything to do with the new clutch bedding in i asked if the flywheel needed changing they said no they will clean and keep it heres a pic

Sound like driveshaft/CV joint tbh.

Also looks like clutch has been slipping a while by that fly, unless that pic makes it look worse! Can be cleaned or skimmed though, rather than replacing so they're probably right.

i felt the flywheel it felt smooth it dose look worse than it was ill upload a pic of the clutch an old couple had had it before me so maybe they ride the clutch hard

strange i would have thought that there may have been gresse from the cv for it to be that is there any way of checking them because the boots are fine no splits at all i did spin the wheels when i had it up on the ramp and there was no grinding noise or anything really just sounded normal

  • Author

im now thinking it might be the inner cv joints would that give the same sort of symptoms that i have been describing ? thanks for all the quick replies btw guys this is great

Could be inner or outer CV, outer tend to make a noise when turning, inner are more constant. There is usually a lack of grease to cause it but I've had many where someone has just chucked a new boot on to please MOT man after the damage is already done and balls/bearings are no longer perfect and tight...

There isn't really a decent test unfortunately, you can try feeling for slight play with the wheels on the floor (if your car isn't too low!) but it's not a great test. I have changed a couple that appeared fine but were noisy.

Better to rule out cheap things first though of course.

it is more constant it doesn't make any noise when turning ill jack the car up and see if i can see anything at the week end hopefully i will find something thanks for the advice ill keep you up to date with what happens

I had a rhythmic knock whenever I turned. Jacked the car up, Checked the track rod ends and one has started to fail. I cracked it off, put the Jack underneath it and tightened it right up. problem solved

ok so i had a look under the car toady and had my son move the steering wheel while i held the steering rack the bit that connects to the wheel and there was a knocking coming from it. it didn't feel like the bushing end though it felt like it was coming from more in the middle if that makes sense plus the steering feels different turning from left to right at speed not the same sort of feeling wondering is it safe to even drive it like that plus i noticed the steering wheel doesn't want to center back up after its been turned plus there is a tiny vibration through the steering wheel and pedals
