Ecoboost 1.0 100 Bhp

Featured Replies

Taken delivery of a new ecoboost just over 1 week. Done 200 miles over the week and thought I'd give the levels and tyres pressures the once over.

On checking the oil, I found that the level is way above the maximum level. On level ground and a cold engine its about 10-12 mm too high. I've tried it 3 times i.e removing and wiping and dipping again.

Am I doing this wrong?

What should I do? I'm now very concerned that this has damaged the engine and that long term it will reduce the life of the engine?

The first time I tried to pick up the new car it had small scratches. The garage took a week to resolve and provide some sweetners.

I'm not sure that a proper pdi has been carried out. I would have thought that the garage would have noticed this?

Should I reject the car and ask for a new replacement?

Any advice much appreciated.

Take it to the dealer, let them check it and give their opinion, I doubt theyll replace the car because it has more oil in than usual.

I think you have to let them try to rectify a fault 3 times before you can reject the car.

Officially 2-4mm over the max is normal and not detrimental and not cause oil push over, 12mm seems a bit to much, take it back and get them to check oil level and drop a bit out if necessary.

I think the dip stick design is awful, I thought my Zetec S was over filled when I got it, but I think its actually the design of the dip stick.

The s bend kind of bits always seem to get some oil on them, I noticed that if I took the dip stick out cleaned it put it back in and then took it back out straight away I got a correct reading oil almost up to the max marker, then a bit of dry dip stick with no oil on it, but then oil on the bent bits of the dip stick, so if it's slightly over filled then it looked like the oil goes all the way past max right over the bent bits.

I even went as far as jacking the car up and draining a couple of hundred mm of oil as I was a bit freaked out by the levels I saw when I checked the oil a couple of days after picking it up. Mine wasn't brand new but it had has had it's first oil service a couple of hundred miles before I bought it.

I hope the above makes sense, I now think the oil levels are ok, but I think the dip stick is really hard to read, it will be interesting to see what other Fiesta owners think.

Took the car back to the dealer. Sales side of the garage seemed very concerned to get it sorted. The Service guys said the the oil was only slightly over. They did try to check 2 minutes after the engine has been turned off. I pointed out they'd have to leave it a few more minutes to get an accurate check.

In the end they dropped out the oil and added the correct quantity so they say. I need to check to be happy. I've done over 250 miles on an engine that's had too much oil. The garage say not to worry. I asked for a new car and they said no (I was told I'd have to get a report to prove that the engine has been damaged before they'd consider a replacement). The engine feels that there is more go in it, so I'm not sure what sort of damage that may have been caused. I'm going to see what Ford say. Its very obvious that no PDI was carried out even though they can prove that the "check oil level" box has been checked. I'm not happy at all!!

The Service side of the garage were not apologetic at all and seemed very unfriendly and rude. Don' think I'd buy a car from this dealer again!!

It may well have just had very slightly too much oil in it, as I think it is the dip stick design which is bad, although I maybe wrong on this.

I would be interested to hear what other Fiesta owners think. Let us know what the oil levels look like when you check it yourself again.

If it was only very slightly over it shouldn't have done the car any damage, but I did really worry the same as you when I originally checked the oil in my car when I first got it.

Its nothing to worry about, other ecoboost engines are overfilled at the factory deliberatly, maybe not quite as much as yours, did they show you how much oil 10mm is over max, its not alot at all compared to capacity.

No they'd didn't show me how much 10ml would be quantity wise.

When they dropped out the engine oil they told me it was 3.6l in quantity. The manual says 4.4, so I think they may have been telling me porkies!!

The overfilling was not spotted at all during the so called PDI, even though they tell me is was carried out.

Biggest worry is that the engine now feels different to when it had too much oil, so not sure what may have been damaged.

Actually your right, 4.4 litres without changing filter, but on a service its 4.6, and from the factory 5.05 should have been put in.

To have 10mm over the mark, would be approx 0.1litre. Not alot and no where sufficient to cause any engine issues

Good info thanks, that put my mind at rest too considering I thought the same kind of thing as the OP

When I picked up my new Fiesta last April the oil level was way over the top. I asked for it to be checked at the 1000 mile check-up and was told that it was normal for new engines to be over filled. I think this is to allow for increased oil consumption during the break in period. I have now covered 5000 miles and the level is still 3mm over the top, the engine is running lovely so a bit of over fill hasn't done it any harm.

Ecoboost engines are made to quite tight tolerances, you will find it runs better after you have done at least 1500 miles.

There is a service bulletin about this

GTDI/Ecoboost engines are overfilled on purpose due to the run in period

These engines use a lot of oil between 1000-2000 miles,

They overfill them to cover themselves as there are a lot of owners who never bother to check the oil

And to last between services

That is official ford information

Im sure someone will come along with a picture of the TSB

Dont think it was a tsb, but there is one about checking level after service with higher than max on dipstick on later ecoboost when left for a longtime before dipping oil,

What your refering to was primarily the 1,5 ecoboost .

Primarily Yes, we will see

Just checked, no tsb .

when i said primarily yes i was reffering to yes there is one for the 1.5/1.6 and we will see, lets see what happens
